Gen. Patton didn't listen to any of this hippie malarkey!

I like both well enough. CCR's overplayed popular stuff seems to hold up better to me than LS's. Plus Fogerty was pretty genius writing all the La, bayou stuff from California without actually ever seeing a bayou.

Skynyrd was a better band

I don't know about that CCR was bass and drums were so tight. Its why Fogerty sucked after leaving CCR; can't replace the band he had.

If it weren't for their lack of longevity, CCR would be a shoo in for the Greatest American Rock Band. the fact that almost all of those great songs came in about a three year period is amazing. I'd put CCR's peak output up against any band in the history of rock music.

CCR has 3 or albums that are great start to finish

then just have bad arse songs like 99 and a half, ramble tamble, and walk on water.

I never had the opportunity to see CCR live, but I did see pre-crash Skynyrd 3 times. They were the tightest rock band I ever saw. This came at the cost of any improvisation/risk taking in their live performances. As such I put them in the category of consummate professionals. CCR, or more accurately John Fogerty, deserves to be categorized with the geniuses of rock 'n roll.

I'd kill to see them together as I enjoy them both immensely.

2 of my favorites.

Skynyrd also has a lot of bad songs. A lot of them.

Only because they have dragged it out 40 years too long. My opinion is that their first 5 albums rank toward the top of greatest consecutive releases from any band in rock....
I feel the same about CCRs first 5 albums as well, so....

"Call Me the Breeze" was written by J.J. Cale.

Thank you for pointing that out. I forgot that it was not an original Skynyrd tune.

Still, my point stands.

Gimme Skynyrd. At the time of the crash they were set to kick off a second stage to their career that would have challenged the first.

For me Lynyrd Skynyrd ends with the plane crash. Second Helping is one of my favorite albums of all time. However, I give CCR the edge by a hair. If you haven't seen the BBC documentary Sweet Home Alabama - The Southern Rock Saga I strongly suggest watching. The link to the full documentary is here. LINK

There is only one CCR album I don't like, "Mardi Gras"

Everything else is fantastic, especially Green River and Cosmo's Factory. Willy and the Poor Boys, Pendulum, Bayou Country and their self titled album... All
Good stuff. And like you said, this was all in a short time frame. It's ridiculous the amount of great work they put out.

By "they" you mean "John".

Give me 'Leh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd

They are underrated as songwriters. This is one of my favorites of all time.
