Thought some of you ABB fans might enjoy this article from Rolling Stone magazine.

quote:

The only note of sentiment during the Allman Brothers Band's October 28th concert at New York's Beacon Theatre – their last at that venue and anywhere else, at least for the foreseeable future – came after more than four hours of music: three sets and an inevitable encore, "Whipping Post." The seven members of the group – the surviving trio of founders, singer-organist Gregg Allman and drummers Butch Trucks and Jaimoe; the long-serving guitar team of Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks; and often overlooked veterans Oteil Burbridge on bass and percussionist Marc Quinones – lined up onstage and took a bow: a first at any Allmans-Beacon show I'd ever attended.

Then Gregg, pressed forward by the others, gave a short speech, another first, recalling the day 45 years ago that he first sang with the original Allmans lineup – led by his late brother, guitarist Duane Allman, and including guitarist Dickey Betts and the late bassist Berry Oakley – at a jam session in Jacksonville, Florida. Gregg cited the precise date, March, 26th, 1969, then said, in a low, worn voice, "Never did I have any idea it could come to this." He gazed gratefully at the crowd, still on its feet, clapping and cheering, at nearly 1:30 a.m. "Now," Gregg added, "We're gonna do the first song we ever played."

The Allmans got back in position and tore into "Trouble No More," the Muddy Waters rumble from Side One of the group's 1969 debut album, The Allman Brothers Band. It sounded nothing like goodbye: tight and gnarly, Derek and Haynes riding the triple-drum-kit surf with avenging poise. But it was.

The longevity of that group given the amount of talent that died/left is really amazing. One of the most unique sounds in rock n' roll history.

Same here. Got to see them a couple of times at Red Rocks plus that set they did at the 2010 Jazzfest was just ridiculous.

Correct me if I am wrong, but haven't they broker up a few times in the past? Saying each time this is it.

They have gone on hiatus because of Gregg's abuse problems and lineup changes but never really called it quits like this. I think now it amounts to Derek and Warren being on fire and wanting to concentrate on their bands. Gregg is practically on life support, and Butch and Jaimoe are not spring chickens anymore.

I saw them the first time by in 1981 I think just before they broke up for 11 yrs I think (they did several encores and Greg was at his finest). I've seen them a couple of time since but the band just isn't the same with Dickey. I understand WHY they booted him but would have been cool for the last show to include him.

Re that 1981 show, James Cotton opened; Delta blues at it's finest.

I found myself getting emotional listening to the concert on satellite. I felt reverent sitting there and thinking about the history and contributions of that seminal American band. The passing of an era,and Time stops for no man, and all that.

I'm looking fwd to the reunion shows that will invariably pop up annually at The Beacon. Listening to the ABB helped my guitar palying emmensely, and to this day there's no doubt who my main influences are when I'm soloing on stage. Love me some Bros!

Well, that didn't take long. From an email I just received:

"Although the Allman Brothers Band has announced it will stop touring after next month's Beacon dates, the Wanee Festival will carry on with the ABB - and now you know the dates so you can save them on your calendar: April 16, 17 and 18, 2015!"

I loved Dickey Betts playing possibly even more than Duane, but he is far too unstable now, it could have been really embarrassing for ABB.

This was a year ago with Dereck Trucks, really, really bad! On Blue Sky that follows he is somewhat better, but nowhere near what he was once capable of.
