Gave the album a listen all the way through after not having heard it for a while and all I could say when it was done was

Pretty much every song on the album is perfect; an explosion of ridiculous guitar parts and raw, emotional vocals from Clapton and Whitlock. Truly a masterpiece.

You've not read the thread about Page, Beck, and Clapton?

If you read that thread, you will see that Clapton was/is a pile of overrated dogshit.

Didn't read, but I can agree that much of Clapton's career after this album was milquetoast at times. Layla album is GOAT though.

I vote yes. The only thing that comes close is Blind Faith.

Also having Duane Allman on that album didn't hurt.

I'm saying its the best thing he produced overall in his career. Obviously the Dominos and Allman contribute to it's greatness, but Clapton is nothing short of incredible on the album IMO.

Derek and the Domino's was a great album but it was not just Clapton. You have to remember the Late great Duane Allman also shared his talents to that album.

Blind Faith and Cream were also high points in Clapton career. Lets not forget his work with George Harrison and the Beatles On While My Guitar gently Weeps.
After seeing what Prince did with that classic at the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame induction oh how I wish Clapton and the late great artist and musician Prince could have gotten together and worked on some projects together.

Layla's a remarkable piece of work, obviously a top candidate for his best production. How does it measure to the epiphany of Mayall with Clapton, the brilliant innovation of Disraeli Gears and the first ever platinum album of Wheels of Fire? I think all three of those albums can be mentioned in the same breath as Layla regarding Clapton's greatest and their individual influence.

Can you imagine how epic it would've been if Prince and Jeff Beck had jammed or recorded something? I know Jeff dug Prince's playing, dk what Prince thought of Beck's but can only assume he likely admired it.

Blind Faith and Cream

No doubt these are his two other greatest endeavors. IMO, Layla is the best single body of work he produced in his career though. Its just one of those albums that flows seamlessly throughout.

I'd say his best solo besides that live Crossroads solo.

No doubt, Layla is one of the best rock albums ever.

Clapton and Allman were, of course, brilliant.

But Bobby Whitlock's vocals and keyboards were absolutely essential, as well. Jim Gordon and Carl Radle were no slouches.

Clapton and Allman complimented each other perfectly. Wish they would have done more together.

Clapton always played better when he was surrounded by equally talented musicians/guitarists whether it be Jack Bruce/Ginger Baker, Duane Allman, Pete Townshend, Jeff Beck, etc.

Clapton is probably the most overrated guitar player of all time

In the context of the late 60s, he was probably the decade's best with Hendrix. Afterwards, when he drastically changed his tone and "mellowed out," absolutely. His greatness mostly rested on his massive influence on guitar gods and sound.

I addressed this first reply.

There is always that guy. "Clapton sucks!!"

No, he doesn't suck. He doesn't tickle you pickle, but he does not suck!

Ricky Skaggs!!! I can't stand looking at that fella and never liked his voice. So much so that I'd rather listen to others play. But I'm not foolish enough to say he sucks. The man can play his balls off.

Clapton has a tone. If you don't like it I guess it is like bluegrass. You just think it sounds like shite. Or in claptons case he makes it sound simple. Hell don't they call him "slow hands"? Great bender of notes and making the guitar sound like it can feel emotion.
