Widespread Panic can't sell out a show anywhere outside of the south. They also don't even have their original guitarist, who was the soul of the band.

I always thought he was a pretty weak guitar player to begin with. It's kinda what turned me off of Widespread.

I haven't decided whether I'm going to jazz fest or not. It's such a hassle for me to get there and I've already bought waka tickets. If I do it will only be for WSP's night

Yeah I hear you. I am still trying to see if I can make it to Waka but I told myself a while ago that any time Panic comes close to me I won't miss them no matter what.

Yeah I would love to be at both but I'm not sure if I'll be able to so jazzfest seems more likely

This fricking shite gets so old.

North Eastern Phish fans are annoying as frick and think Phish is the only band in the world. 18 year old Panic fans, like a particularly mad poster in this thread, feel like this is some fricking dick measuring contest and have a serious inferiority complex.

Phish is a far bigger and important band you fricking cry babies. Phish sells out venues across the country that wouldn't even book Panic these days. This is coming from someone who's seen Panic 75+ times in my life. I love that band. I can also admit that they aren't on the same tier as Phish anymore. They're a nostalgia act. There was a day when they were on the same level, but for more than a decade that hasn't been the case.

It's all great live music. It's not a fricking contest.

From an outsiders point of view...

I'd say GD>ABB>WSP, Phish> the rest of that stuff...

Hippies arguing... classic...

edit: I will say the outsider has more contempt for the Phish fan...

ABB deserves upper tier.

Longevity = check
individual musicians in band = check
distinct sound = check
long hair = check
ability to appeal to jammers and fans of singles = check (gives them a nod no other jam band has)

But to the dumbass calling ABB "unarguably the best" is stupid. The Grateful Dead played like 75 shows a year for 30 fricking years. They are the epitomy of jam bands. If you want to argue against that you are free to, I'm not claiming they are unarguably the best. But I sure as hell can argue that they are.

Definitely.

No argument needed for the Grateful Dead. If anything it's debatable to consider Phish in the same category as them.

This whole rank it mentality people have is stupid in the first place. They should spend their time talking shite about bands like nickleback, not WSP, Umphrey's, etc...

The beauty of a niche genre like Jam is that there are so few great bands in it. They all have a distinct sound and so a person like myself who loves the Grateful Dead may not care a whole lot for Phish. And I don't.

And I have seen them live. I had a good time, I've seen Trey play with Phil Lesh 3 times, seen him and Mike Gordon tour together, seen him play with the Trey Anastasio Band. I just don't fawn over their music.

I lived in the Northeast for all of high school and I know what their fans are like. They are either preppy folks who smoke weed or are dreadlocked stinkers, not much inbetween. They do have an elitist mentality most of the time. If you compare a band to them it is like telling them their child is ugly.

When I moved down here from Connecticut none of my friends listened to the Grateful Dead. I played it for them, they don't like it. I still play it on my own, but I don't yell at people who don't like them.

I like most of the bands mentioned in this thread, some more than others. While I think GD is probably the top jam band of all time, I don't think any of them touch the sound of the Allman Brothers Band. Not only is their sound tight as frick, nobody can wail the blues like Gregg Allman. I know jambands are more about musicianship and singing is not a top priority, but ABB brings both. Plus for me, Duane's guitar work is on another level compared to anything else these bands have going for them.
