Man,that song Burnin'Sky,simple as shite, but so damn awesome,It's like Cool Hand Luke, and Paul Rodgers is just showing off.

Workin on the railroad everyday-but they cant keep me here-and I'm not gonna stay

That's killer stuff to me,and he belts it out so beautiful.

Oh and this part: The judge said" this man's a danger to humanity, we're going to lock him up and throw away the key,now baby your love has sent me to jail, but I'd rather die than see you with another man.

That's some good stuff.

I'll say Mercury or David Lee Roth are the best "frontmen"

Roth more often than not sounded like shite live; Mercury on the other hand could belt it out.

Steve Perry or Robert Plant.

But Rodgers is definitely top 5.

Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy. The complete package. Singer, bass player, great stage presence

where would Ozzy rank on the list of great rock voices?

Meh - he's a frontman, no question. His voice was perfect for Sabbath, but it was not a particularly great voice to begin with and it did not age well.

yeah, they rarely do.

Just heard Mama I'm Coming Home on the way to work. i get that he may not have a ton of range. But, i like his singing.

He has/had a unique vocal delivery - not quite nasally, not quite raspy, not quite straining - the edges of his voice imparted a musical tension that enhanced both Sabbath's music and his own.

He simply didn't have the vocal ability to deliver the way the NWOBHM singers did (even Joe Elliott), but neither did Robert Plant - but Ozzy and Plant were perfect for their bands.

So, at the end of the day "range" - "clarity" and more or less objectively quantifiable measures of musical "ability" don't count for much if you don't have the songs.

Sabbath, as well as Ozzy as a solo artist, had the songs.

cool conversation to have. Not going to get a lot of people to agree on many things. Music is no exception.

While we're at it, what's your opinion of the guy from Counting Crows?

Just a really weird guy, but he could write lyrics. One of the crazy stories about Pops Midnight (RIP) - a man born before WWII - an Elvis man who didn't like those new fangled "Beatles" or anything with distorted guitars (although he also liked The Eagles and didn't mind Skynyrd) - he LOVED Mr. Jones and Me. LOVED it.

Damnedest thing. Duritz's enduring legacy with me is that - despite looking like he didn't bathe and would smell bad (greasy, like Jermaine Jackson always looks greasy), he nailed some of the hottest women in Hollywood in his day - I think he was with one of the Friends girls (he went from Anniston to Cox or vice versa), while he was also banging Applegate during the later years of MwC, until he got caught.

Another unique delivery guy, but I was never a huge fan of Counting Crows - certainly not much past the big radio hits.

What about Daryl Hall?

Much more R&B or Soul than traditional rock, although they did sell out in the early '80s (not derogating, I would have, too).

I think his voice is exceptional and his delivery is up there with Sam Cooke, Al Green and those cats, who are more comparable.
