Is moshing now passé or even borderline trashy?

Admittedly, I'm a younger metalhead when compared with some of you guys, but I have been to my fair share of shows. I've seen thrash, sludge, grindcore, black metal, death metal, and everything in between. Plus, I like to think I have a pretty good understanding of the subculture.

I have a tendency to try and catch shows down on the floor, ideally right in front of the stage. Consequently, I'm usually at the mercy of the mass of bodies behind me. I don't mind a little contact, but when I get unexpectedly slammed against the stage...well, then I have a tendency to want to retaliate in a malicious manner.

It usually seems like the perpetrators are your run-of-the-mill miscreants (i.e. drunks, 'roid heads, tattoos and gauges, etc.). Every now and then, there will be some unexpected frail female or a little dweeb attempting to throw themselves into the mix, but typically it seems like its guys who are fricked up on alcohol and are just itching to start shite.

If the guys want to contain their moshing to the center of the floor, then I have no beef. However, every time it spills out to the front it seems to hinder my ability to enjoy the show. I'm constantly having to keep my head on a swivel and prepare myself for the next violent collision.

Is anyone else a bit sick of it?

I never got it. Certainly don't now. Just a chance to get hurt.

I was there to listen to music, drink beer, and catch poon. None can really be done near a mosh pit.

I did make one 11 year old ecstatic. He fell off the crowd and I caught him. He realized I was capable of throwing him and started screaming "throw me!" I obliged. Heard a big "hell yeah" as he flew away to his doom. Threw someone's child like a rag doll INTO a mob.

A nice circle pitt can be fun, the problem seems to be people just dont understand the concept anymore.

Trashy? IMO yes, but people enjoy music in different ways, and I get that. That being said, moshers are a-holes who don't care how their behavior affects others who choose to enjoy music without moshing. I say they should have a separate area away from the stage for moshers to mosh all they want and not disturb other non-moshers around them.

That'll never happen, but would be nice.

Agreed. When you start hitting women and innocent bystanders because of your overwhelming compulsion to strike someone, then you are no longer just having a good time.

Also, guys have started incorporating hardcore slam dancing into metal shows. These frickers with their karate moves and flailing limbs need to be punched right in the dick.

moshing passe or trashy? nah, you're just getting old.

slam dancing or early moshing wasn't so bad but shite like walls of death with roid ragers and 275lbs fat slobs running at each other is something I don't really care about except from afar.

In New Orleans that guy gets his arse whipped with a quickness, that is not acceptable but it does seem to be more common these days.

You're talking about 20% of moshers. Does this happen? Yes. However, every time it does those dickheads are pummelled by the rest of us in the pit. Seriously, we would punch the frickers that were trying to hurt people, especially when they would take it outside of the pit. It is unfortunate that these tools ruin it for everyone. Of all the concerts and mosh pits I was a part of in my wee lad days, this happened in about 1 of every 5 shows I went to. At the rest of the shows everyone was very respectful.

I haven't been in a mosh pit in over 10 years, so I can't speak to this nowadays. I can see this though.

What's funny is that the concerts where the pits were full of these douchebags were not the ones you would expect. At the Ozzy and Type O Negative show many years back, there was a bald fricker who was running at people like a bull and throwing fists everywhere. We all finally had enough of the dickhead and beat the shite out of him. Security came and threw him out.

Meanwhile at Slayer shows every single person in those pits were very respectful. So yeah, what you say rings true, because it's the dickheads that aren't moshers and who don't get the concept that act like obnoxious pricks and cause the problems

It depends on the band. Some music just makes you want to kill people. Slayer and Cannibal Corpse shows are just one giant pit, doesn't matter if you're a 100lb girl or 300lb guy. Mayhem/Watain last year was especially brutal. Those types of bands tend to attract the older metalheads who know how to behave. Bands like LOG attract a lot of douchey, jock types who just want to mosh. They tend to ruin the vibe.

Mosh pits are ridiculous.

With that said, I always thought it would be fun to take a couple of jam band fans and teleport them into a Pantera mosh pit from back in the day. I'd pay good money to watch that.

I'm older now and there to watch the band, that said you can still be on the floor but you have to keep the bullshite in front of you not behind you.

I havent been to an arena show in probably 10 years, just clubs and small venues and those places are good at having security either near or in the pitt to keep it clean.

New Orleans shows are easily the most intense I have seen. And I've seen a number of women get knocked down after being completely oblivious to what was about to happen.

In Baton Rouge, it's usually the stupid arse hipster-looking types at a stoner or hard rock show that like to start shite. At least when I go to a metal show, I know to look out for it. However, I'm not expecting to get slammed at a frickin' Wolfmother concert.

That's funny that you point that out Brosef, because I was expecting the Cannibal Corpse show this past March to be intense and it was oddly tamed.

frick, the Melvins crowd at One Eyed Jack's was the most batshit crazy I have seen yet. Then again, there were a lot of Napalm Death fans there...

True. I was surprised by the demographics of a Lamb of God show when compared with other metal shows.

Same here. Was gonna say something along these same lines.

Was gonna mention this too. I saw Slayer just last night. Didn't get in the pit, as that is VERY rare for my 50-year old arse these days. Have to have one HELL of a buzz. But yeah, I did see on a few occasions someone hit the deck and immediately three or four people reaching down to pick them up. That's the way it should be.

But to answer the question, it doesn't really bother me because I know it's going to happen. And I usually do stay in front of it up near the stage. Exactly what I did last night. The pit never really even came close to where I was. I did have a slight bruise across the bridge of my nose this morning from the shoe of a body surfer. That shite better not spread to my eyes.
