To a decent level

edit: I read music, played trumpet for many years, a little guitar. Point is that I have some music background.

Already playing trumpet is a advantage, you could probably play some decent tunes in a few months if you are dedicated. I would check out the almost endless lessons on youtube. For basics and beginner to advanced blues harp Adam Gussow's lessons on You Tube have more information that you will ever be able to use, I think he now has over 200 lessons on his channel.

Gussow is a wealth of info. The harp is a wind instrument so remember to breath from the diaphragm and put that sucka deep in the pocket of your mouth for max tone. Isolating notes is probably the hardest thing to learn, but a diatonic harp lays out like horn lines. Try the 5-6 draw trill. You'll know that sound when you hear it. Learning how to bend isn't too difficult, but start by trying to isolate the 2 draw and get a good solid tone from it. That is the root note in 2nd postion that you hear most blues guys and rockers using.

There's a shite ton more to learn.

If you want to be as good as Alanis Morissette, zero seconds.
If you want to be as good as Bob Dylan, two weeks.
If you want to be as good as John Popper, no idea. Get it done and let us know.

Seriously, though, great fun instrument. It's easy to pick up a few tunes and put your own spin on things since any harmonica you buy is in a specific key, meaning if you're playing along with a band, you sort of can't go wrong with it if you have the right key.
