Or would it be Classic Hipster Rock?

Either way, I'm glad I stuck with the Pixies even after not digging Surfer Rosa. I dig the rest of their albums. Gems a plenty. Fur zample...

That's actually the reason I started the thread. I dunno. I'm not quite that old, but i think my oldest brother could maybe opine.

To those 35+:
1) Do The Pixies fall under the umbrella of the just-coined genre of "Hipster Classic Rock"?
2) If not, who does? Who are the original hipster bands?

Velvet Under ground would be the first "indie band" IMO

others : Joy Division, Echo and the Bunnymen, b-52s, ....

The original "hipster" bands? I don't know, I'd say its the concept of post-punk "college" rock after the punk revolution. I'll limit it to that era:

the dBs
IRS era REM
The Replacements
Mission of Burma
Sonic Youth
The Cure
XTC
Midnight Oil
Crowded House

Split Endz

You could add

Psychedelic Furs
Devo
Elvis Costello

I know Split Endz is more hipster cred, but I always like Crowded House better. Good additions.

I think the OP is shooting for that era that was post-punk but pre-"alternative". The Pixies would qualify of course, but they were considered too mainstream by true music snobs of the era.

I would probably consider bands getting significant airplay on college radio in the late 80s and early 90s.
