I just watched this again. It is amazing how quickly GnR blew up and imploded. Axl, truly is a mesmerizing a-hole.
I often wonder what could have been if his ego had been tamed....or was his ego simply what made it all work? Who knows?...one thing is certain, though: Axl is a d*ck!

Axl,Izzy, & Duff are all still close. Axl still hates Slash & Steven Adler & is basically insane when it comes to his hatred of them. If they were to ever work it out & do a show or a tour(which will NEVER happen by the way), it would probably equal the Zeppelin Celebration Day show by being one of the toughest tickets in music. No joke.

A few cliffs on the infernal hatred within the group?

I liked GnR ok, but never really followed why they became bitter enemies

I vividly recall seeing Welcome to the Jungle on Headbangers Ball and knowing that shite was huge. I tuned in for weeks after in hopes of seeing it again.

All was awesome until Axl went coo coo.

The first time it aired was around 1am. I don't think that first airing was on hbb...but I was awake watching MTV when it aired that night. Then months later I heard that sweat riff from "Sweet Child O' Mine" on the radio. I was a huge fan!

It all added to his mystique and he knew it and lived it up.

Duff McKagan played with the band recently and there are reports that he may be able to get them back reunited with Slash given some time. I've seen Slash quoted recently in both a positive and negative vibe to reuniting.

I've still never heard the reason they broke up but did read online recently that Axl and Slash had different tastes in music and that caused a rift in which direction the band was going to go but it also said there was another major "incident" that was part of it and I have been unable to find out what that was.

Yeah I read that shortly after posting

I can see it, it seems like Axl and Slash just don't mesh. After reading some articles it seems like Slash shits on everything you would think would be cool. I know Axl had his issues but Slash doesn't seem too accommodating either.

It's surprising they had as much success together as they did

If I recall correctly, they didn't so much as "break up" as much as they fell apart, one band member at a time, until it was just Axl, Dizzy, and a bunch of hired hands.

Dizzy was a hired hand, too. Though hiring a keyboard player was a bad sign in the first place.

Remember, it was Izzy who left the band first (ok, after Adler was kicked out). I don't remember if Duff or Slash left next, but it seems to me this isn't just a Slash v. Axl issue. And considering Duff and Izzy were perfectly willing to work with Slash in Velvet Revolver, it seems it's not just two guys who are the issue (though Izzy did play a few gigs with Axl as well, but he's a guy who hates touring and shows no inclination to be in the public eye again).

I think Duff and Izzy use Slash as a useful excuse to not get back together. But if Axl and Slash buried the hachet tomorrow, G'n'R would not get back together because the other two guys really have no interest in Axl's drama.

It was a great moment in time. Let's just leave it be. We can't go back to 1988.

I recall Slash saying in an interview that, "I still wanted to thrash around in the rock 'n roll gutter … while Axl wanted to become Madonna."
gotta love Slash

GNR was great. Something that burns that hard that fast isn't meant to last too long. All of the issues that made GNR great is what also destroyed them.

the reason they broke up was heroin, plain and simple.

Rose needs to get back on that shite. He looks like an alcoholic short order cook for some truck stop in West Texas.

I think there are a lot of reasons for the hatred. Slash has said that basically, it was all going straight to Axl's head, and while Slash and GnR was a hard rock band, Axl was taking things soft. He said that the video for civil war was when he realized the dude was gone - apparently Axl wanted to the final scene to be him jumping off an aircraft carrier and swimming with dolphins. Slash was like - WTF?

Also, I read, I think from Duff, that Axl drew up a contract to give give the GnR songwriting rights to him exclusively. Then, threatened to not go out on stage till the others (Duff, Izzy, Slash) signed it. They did because they were afraid of a riot. Next day they went tot he manager and his response was "I don't work for you. I work for GnR."

The Michael Jackson aspect is new to me.

Izzy's importance to the band is grossly under estimated.

I am tired of seeing one side of a story that has 3 or 4. VH1 should have done whatever it takes to get Axl in on that documentary. Imagine watching the epic one they did on Motley Crue without Vince...or without Nikki.

Also, Izzy...would love to hear from him.

Much like I do not want to go to a GNR concert without all 5 (or at least 4) of the Appetite members, I do not want to see anymore documentaries with Duff, Slash, and Matt Sorum doing most of the talking. Don't wanna hear from Gilby Clarke about the cup of coffee he had as the rhythm player. Just do it 100 percent or never do it again.
