I'm very new to this band. Mark Farner was on a That Metal Show episode, so I decided to check them out. From some of the stuff I've heard, these guys were really good.

What are some opinions on these guys?

They're ok, I like Closer to Home and some of their other American hits. Didn't resonate much with me compared to some of their contemporaries though.

At one point, they were arguably the heaviest band in America.

They're one of many classic groups from the original wave of American hard rock. I used to play them on a regular basis when I was an FM dj.

Also, they might possibly have the best cover of Traffic's "Feelin' Alright".

They sold out Shea Stadium as quickly as the Beatles at the height of their popularity. I met Farner once, very nice man. I always thought they were a very talented group.

LOL The Locomotion, was a no. 1 hit for them in one of the most horrid years in rock history, 1974.

I was on a GFR kick a few years back. I learned to play a couple of their songs and tried to sing them. Farner had a great voice.....me not so much.

They were 100x better live than in studio

Do yourself a favor and listen to "Caught in the Act"

That was a great version of that song. They did a really good Gimme Shelter too.

Great band, that was pretty smart. They were a pretty heavy band, but realized that they needed some pop stuff on AM Radio. They were way ahead of their time. Check Out Shinin ON and their cover of Gimme Shelter.

Then they had songs like Some Kind Of Wonderful, and Locomotion, that were huge radio hits. Mark Farner was a very versatile singer, and one of my all time favorites.

Wish they had made a longer run. The beat was sweet.

Without Mark Farner it is just Grand Funk in name only.

Grand Funk Railroad was the most famous rock band ever from Flint, Michigan. Their music from 1970-73 was quite good and included "Closer To Home" and the joyous "Footstompin' Music".

In 1973 they became simply "Grand Funk", and were more pop oriented but still good. Their big hits included "We're An American Band", "Locomotion", "Some Kind of Wonderful" and "Bad Time".
