This run really is incredible.
Muswell Hillbillies has always been my favorite. It's basically their "Americana" record. "Strangers" off of Lola might be my favorite song though.

I'll be that guy and say I prefer the 80's Kinks. My good friend growing up was a huge Kinks fan. So that's what I listened to mostly from them. Sure I like their earlier material too but Word of Mouth is my favorite album and Live The Road is a great live album.

Saw them live at the Fox in Atlanta in '80, from the 2nd row. They were a fantastic band to watch live.
Ray handed me a pick at the end of the show. Somehow in the 90s I lost it.
Ray and Dave were getting along pretty well on that tour - they routinely fought on stage (and off) over the years (maybe Ray was still pissed off about Dave stealing his chips).

Like most people who aren't familiar with a popular band, I'd only really heard the radio songs like You Really Got Me, Lola, etc.
The only three Kinks songs that ever come on the radio are You Really Got Me, Lola, and All Day & All of the Night. This is baffling considering how deep their portfolio is. It shows how incredibly shallow & repetitive top 40 radio is - it's not like the Kinks are some obscure band! But you could listen to classic rock radio for a year and out of those 24 albums, you'd hear 3 songs.

Yeah. Sirius does a little bit better job.

Village Green Preservation Society is one of the best albums of all time so i would start there. Next would be Lola Versus Powerman.

I need to go ahead and Something Else as another great album.

The Kinks were one of the first bands to deliberately change their sound up from record to record - this was maddening to the suits who - as always - want the same "product" over and over.
Ray Davies was the front man, but his brother Dave Davies is one of the best and most underrated guitarists from that or any other era of rock music.
Maybe the best overall "musicians" of the British Invasion - they were akin to being the British Beach Boys in terms of vision, talent and influence.

Most under-rated band in the history of history.
People covered the 60s stuff they did pretty good. The Kinks Ultimate Collection is a two-disc greatest hits that covers a lot of the bases.
I like a lot of their 80s stuff, because that's the first I heard from them. "Come Dancing" is about as good as anything they did in the 60s. "Do It Again" is a nice little rocker, "Lost and Found" is a gorgeous ballad, albeit with some very 80s production values.
