I own Aenima, but I want to dive deep into their other albums/material. What's best and/or a good starting point?

Listen to Undertow and Opiate. You can stop after that.

IMO you can listen to 10,000 days and Lateralus in their entirety. Metal masterpieces.

Start with the Opiate EP and then listen to the four LPs (Undertow, Aenima, Lateralus, and 10,000 Days). The progression of their sound is something to marvel at.

Ignore all previous opinions.

Start with Opiate and listen to their progression.

10,000 Days is a masterpiece of an album

Saw Tool last night, in Sacramento and they were as awesome as ever

He would be skipping Lateralus if that's the case.

They have not made many albums. Each one shows growth and progression. Best answer is to start at the beginning and listen to the evolution. I loved Aenema but never gave Lateralus a try because I'm not a fan of Schism. After 10k dropped, I went back and realized what I'd been missing.

I disagree. The only real progression on 10k days might be wings for Marie parts 1 and 2. They had never done a piece like that. Other than that, the whole album is pretty much standard Tool.

FWIW I enjoyed 10kdays a ton when it came out. You should definitely give it a listen, but I'd save it for last. I listened to it on the reg for probably at least a year. But at one point I grew tired of it and realized that it doesn't hold a candle to their previous work. Aenima and Lateralus are works of art and one of a kind. They did an amazing job of creating something truly unique that will stand the test of time. Opiate and Undertow are also very good, but not as polished.

I've been faithfully listening to Tool since Opiate (1992).

I truly question Tool fans who shite on 10,000 Days (the album). 10,000 Days includes Tool's greatest song to date - "Rosetta Stoned". That one song is practically the prefect summation of their entire musical catalogue. It contains all the best elements from previous albums wrapped into one 12 minute experience.

10,000 Days is amazing for that song alone, yet 10,000 Days also includes several more hidden surprises as well, all of which must be discovered individually. Sure, it may contain too much filler "noise", but the payoff is huge!

I listened to "Rosetta Stoned" for nearly 4 months every single day on repeat. With every listen I would hear more depth, discover new textures, decipher new meaning. The song took on a life of its own, growing like a child into adulthood. It matured over several months, at first raw and powerful and as it aged it became subtle yet sophisticated.

I would recommend anyone new to Tool to listen to Tool's albums in order. Start with Opiate and progress to 10,000 Days.

However, please understand that one listen of any Tool album isn't enough. For example, I didn't truly discover the brilliance of 10,000 Days until several months after I purchased the album. Some songs which I initially felt were weak I later regarded as masterpieces.

Tool albums require repeat listening in different settings. Tool isn't for sidewalk fans...Tool requires patience, dedication, and study.

Start from the beginning and go in order. This approach works best for any band. It's foolproof

every time a tool thread pops up, i'm surprised to see i'm the only one that hates 10,000 days. you've got to be a mizzoukills level tool homer to think that album is nothing more than rejected song ideas and uninspired riffs and lyrics from the lateralus sessions. it sounds like a tool tribute band trying to cash in on the lateralus sound for their first original album. the riffs suck. the lyrics suck. no sign of any calculus at all. having to combine two tracks to get a real song out of it is a gimmicky and also sucks.

L...O...L

You're no Tool fan if you think "Rosetta Stoned" is uninspired Lateralus throwout material.

Look, I got no problem with mizzoukills and his love for 10k days. It's the typical tool fan holier than thou attitude that annoys me. I don't like 10K days, and it has nothing to do with me not "getting it." It's just not interesting to me.

not even maynard cares about tool anymore.

not trying to discourage the OP from exploring. opiate to lateralus is proof of a band writing and performing at a very high level.

I know you're trolling, but I'll play along. You don't think "Rosetta Stoned" is one of Tool's very best songs?
