I was there for opening night in the Cajundome last Friday, too. Good enough shoe to see again.

How much if the "request" part us staged?

Seems too perfect to me.

My wife and I had the same conversation on the way home. She has a master's degree in vocal performance and she believes that it's not staged per say but more he is a master at seemingly working items of opportunity into the show. This ability is what has helped make him the icon that he is today.

For example Laura gets the guitar b/c her last concert was Elvis wasn't staged but it was a "touching moment" he occasionally uses to give away a guitar at a concert. Last month in Billings, Montana he gave a guitar to a fan that had a sign that read "You're the reason I play the guitar"

The wedding proposal is another item that works into the concert as the opportunity presents itself. The opportunities are practiced and when they present themselves he has certain cues for the rest of the band to follow. For example when he says "I can read the sign but I don't understand it" is a cue to alert camera man to zoom on the sign that caught his attention and let others know to get ready to follow his lead.

Don't forget he has the whole concert to notice these signs and work them into the encore act.

As for the songs for the encore he has a large group of songs that he chooses from. I have found

I was there with a group who had a sign for "She's Every Woman" on Friday. They worked like hell to get down near the stage during the requests, but once they did, they got it on screen and it was played.

Now, was Garth going to play it regardless and he just found a sign? Who knows.

At last weeks Saturday show they had a woman with a sign saying she postponed her wedding for the concert and he sang she's every woman to her, then she held up a sign that said "you're my hallpass" and he broke into "that summer" idk if it's staged or not if not, but it's led him to selling out every city he's been too the last 2 years after nearly 20 years of being in "retirement"
