This is a site with very basic breakdown of the genres and where they came from. It includes sample songs from each genre, also.

LINK /

Hopefully this can help us not call everything "techno".

I like that site, but I'd rather watch Greg Oden and Tommy Lee tag-team my girlfriend than discuss the differences between House, Progressive House, Electro House, Chicago House, Acid House, Ambient House, Deep House, Funky House, Tribal House, Soulful House, Microhouse, Tech House, And Dr. Gregory House.

I call it EDM, and I put everything on a single sliding scale.

On the left end of the scale, we have "trancy". On the right end of the scale we have "dancy". Think Enya vs. straight up thumping beats.

It's an oversimplified model, sure, but it (a) rhymes and (b) it's better than wanting to gouge my eyes out with a spoon while listening to some 19 year old kid try to impress the cute 17 year old candy raver girl who won't bang him by opining that [DJ X's] latest album is way more jungle than drum n bass.

I'd rather just assume the cute candy raver girl is 18 and sneak her back to the coat room for some unprotected sex.

By far the most in-depth guide I've seen. It's nice getting all the samples and seeing how all the different genres evolved into and from one another.

Yeah, it's kind of the love child of Drum and bass and two step garage.
