Joey Bada$$ and the Pro Era crew celebrated the life and music of their fallen brother Courtney Everald “Jamal” Dewar Jr., better known as Capital STEEZ, on STEEZ Day at Central Park’s Rumsey Playfield in New York Tuesday (July 7).
The day, which also signified what would have been STEEZ’s 22nd birthday, was filled with performances from everyone from Joey to Flatbush Zombies to the Underachievers. Joey honored STEEZ by cranking out notable tracks like “World Domination,” “Hardknock,” “Pennyroyal” and “Survival Tactics,” the latter which was a collaboration with STEEZ. Hip-hop heads recited every line word for word and put their hands in the sky while chanting STEEZ’s name. After all, the day was dedicated to the fallen soldier and his musical legacy.
Brooklyn’s own Flatbush Zombies — Meechy Darko, Zombie Juice and Erick Arc Elliott — stormed the stage before Badmon and moved through songs like “Bliss” and “222.” If you’ve ever been to a Zombies show, the energy from the crowd is on 100 and this time was no different. The metal barricades came down due to the fact fans got so amped up to the point where security wasn’t enough to tame their spirit.
AK and Issa Gold of the Underachievers also paid homage to STEEZ, who died in 2012, by grabbing the mic and performing songs like ”Amorphous” off their debut album, Cellar Door. Other acts that hit the stage earlier in the evening included Smoke DZA, Phony PPL, Dyme-A-Duzin, 22 Love and SMTH.
