In the valley below, passion pit, twenty one pilots, st. Vincent, borns, chvrches, electric guest, the Griswolds, phantogram, bloc party ....etc could go on.

I don't dig his other two albums before Heal. Seems like every song is so slow and mellow on those albums.

he was a solo artist before the heal album and now he's got a legit lead guitarist to record with for the next album instead of the keyboard player they kicked out.

Wolf Parade is up there pretty high on my list of favorite indie bands of all time. Apologies to Queen Mary turned 10 this yeaer.

I tend to think sound over label... but the one that ticks both boxes and is still active (and they own one of the most prominent indie labels - Merge Records) is.. Superchunk

I'd love to hear how Minor Threat is not indie. They are the flagship band of one of the pre-eminent indie labels in the nation.

But the whole identity of "indie" is taken from American hardcore. The idea of DIY, and intentionally ignoring the mainstream is the punk ideals of the early 80s. The whole worship of indie labels is part and parcel of hardcore. So Minor Threat literally starts indie rock as we know it, yet gets excluded from it because they play too fast?

indie is a genre now, not a classification between independent and mainstream.
