That's Elvis playing the bass on that song. Bill had bought a new electric bass and he put it down because he was frustrated by it or something. He walked out, Elvis picked it up, and they turned on the recorders.
I heard on the radio last night that many times, he would watch TV and be picking on a bass. When he met the Beatles in Palm Springs, he was actually playing a bass when they showed up.
