I have an old Pearl Export Series that I will keep because it has sentimental value, but I want to invest in a reasonably priced (but quality) kit.

I will be playing alternative rock, but I think I want to upgrade to something like Gretsch or Ludwig. I play one up, one down, and I want something that is a bit compact.

What should I do Music Board?!

Buy a high quality used kit. Both those brands are highly respected.

If you're near Nashville (or just up for an adventure) go to Forks or one of the many, many music shops there. You can find great kits at unbelievable prices.

It all depends on the price range which you consider to be "reasonable". I'm still playing my 1996 DW Collectors kit that I bought from a drummer buddy back in 1999. I'm not sure drums are made much better than DW makes them, but, their prices have simply skyrocketed over the last decade so, while I recommend DW, I would suggest shopping around for a used kit.

I also own a set of Risen drums, which are hand-made and resonate beautifully (easiest drums I've ever tuned) and which I bought new in 2005. The quality is on par with my DWs, but the price was well within my "reasonable" area. Check out the company's website (risendrums.com); they usually have three or four used kits for sale if ordering brand new ones is out of the question.

If I had to choose between Gretsch and Ludwig, I'd have to go with Gretsch because, in my experience with both brands, I've found Gretsch drums to be easier to tune and to be better constructed than Ludwig.

I hope you'll keep us updated on your search, and let us know what kit you decide to go with...

Sounds pretty damned sweet.

I have classic Ludwigs of maple as well. They are of a white pearl lacquered exterior.

This was part of my reason for going with Gretsch. They're a damn solid product for a good price. I have a buddy that plays a higher end Tama set and they won't hold tune for shite and he plays SOFT. The guy can keep a set of heads for a year and he plays at least 2 shows a week on top of practice. I pound the ever living shite out of mine at times and they hold tune extremely well.

My rack toms (8x8, 8x10, 9x12) have great range to them when tuning as do my floors (14x14 & 16x16).

It was tedious as hell but it makes them sound sooooo much better.

Maybe I'll do mine with olive oil. You know, go for that Mediterranean sound.

My price range would be anything less than a grand.

Yeah I looked around for a while before buying. They're built as well as some of the higher end kits I tried out and sound just as good. For the money, they're tough to beat.

Without a doubt the Gretsch Catalina Maple or even the Club. Believe it or not, the Catalina Club's little bass, if mic-ed up right, sounds just as good as any 22inch. I personally play the Club bc I play a lot of jazz, but the kit transitions great to funk/rock.

Yeah the club had a pretty nice kick. I kind of wish I would've gotten it over the standard for "space" purposes but my love of big drums got the best of me

i'm actually leaning more toward the club. i'm a smaller person anyway, so it will probably help with space and comfort. and the price is great!
