Curtis Mayfield - GOAT soul artist?

I would even contend that he ought to be in the conversation as one of the greatest musicians of modern music. He is a fantastic guitar player, and his orchestrations are very eclectic and top notch. To this day I don't hear much music that is better than his, which is saying something since there's plenty of great stuff out there.
I'm not a big rap music fan, but he might be the most sampled/copied artist in the genre.

Roy Ayers and James Brown are definetly more sampled.

I'll go top ten but he has some stiff competition from his own era :
Otis Redding
Sam Cooke
Smokey Robinson
Jimmy Ruffin
James Brown
Among others

JB was revloutionary, but he didn't have the musical range of Curtis.

Here's an example of his musical range. Stare and Stare
Very mellow, bluesy song that is incredibly strong.

Or Sly. Sly was so versatile and a virtuoso, as well as an innovator in the studio-very underrated.

What about his little brother David, one of the greatest soul singers of all-time? Was a big influence on Michael Jackson for crying out loud!

The guitar player in my band has him on his "Mount Rushmore" of influences along side Mississippi Blues McDowell, Jimmy Hendrix, and Bruce Springsteen.
