Concert letdowns and concerts that unexpectedly rocked

What concerts have you been really amped up for, only to be let down (doesn't have to be a crappy concert, just didn't deliver). Conversely, what concerts have you stumped upon or reluctantly went to that blew you away?
I saw Clapton at the BJC in Birmingham a while back. Drove 5 hours from Baton Rouge, and 5 hours back in the same day. It was "meh". The acoustic set they did was nice, but you just got the feeling he'd played that same show 1,000 times.
On the other hand, I saw Old Crow Medicine Show at Hangout in 2011 and was absolutely blown away. Kind of drifted into the tent to get out of the sun, and they absolutely brought the house down. Raconteurs at Bonaroo in 2008 was the same way; not a huge Jack White fan, but the show was one of the best I've seen.

I was dragged kicking and screaming to see The Reverend Horton Heat at The Varsity in the mid-90s. That was a great experience. I've never seen so many bodies flying around in my life.
Saw Prince in Lafayette in late 90s. Absolutely shook the roof off the place.
Saw Prince in New Orleans about 7 or 8 months later. He looked and acted so bored, it was like he almost wanted to cry. Like a dove. <----SWIDT?

Honestly I don't remember their whole set. But I was in high school and saw Van Halen in Atlanta. I really dug VH and was so pumped for the show. Me and my buddy went in early to see the opener and get to our seats and take it all in. This opening band that I'd never heard of (didn't even see who it was before the show started) comes on and within the first few notes of their opening song blew me the frick away. They rocked as hard as VH that night. Here was the song

Well, I guess you answered a question that is asked at every rock show.
You were, in fact, ready to rock and roll!

Concert letdowns - Alabama Shakes. Seen them twice at festivals and they've been two of the most boring shows I've seen. Maybe it was just the festival setting but it's a shame because I like their albums.
Unexpectedly rocked - Beck. Went to his show as just a casual fan but he is incredibly entertaining live. So many hits and was one of the most fun shows I've seen.

I love his work.

This happens a lot, in my experience. Give me a club with 1,000-2,000 max capacity, and it'll be hard to not walk away really happy. But festivals can be hit or miss.
Saw Metallica at Bonaroo in 2008 and they just rocked. Even the hippies that stayed were really into it (though it was pretty awesome to see a lot of them run for cover with their fingers in their ears when they opened with "Creeping Death" ) LINK
Saw O.A.R. that same trip, which I thought would be a great setting for that band, and they just sucked. Kind of a boring, lazy performance.

Alice Cooper- I was never really into him & liked a few of his songs(18, School's Out). I saw him last year open up for Motley Crue & he & his band absolutely blew the Crue off the stage. He has 3 guitar players & he sounds so much heavier live than what you hear on the albums. He also has a hot blonde named Nita Strauss who used to play in an all female Iron Maiden tribute band(The Iron Maidens) & she can really play. I highly suggest if you are in NOLA go see them when he opens up for Motley again this Sept and it is okay to leave & miss the Crue. The band is still good but Vince is done & an embarrassment

Biggest letdowns would be Primus at the Sugar Mill a few years ago and Tool in BR and New Orleans in 2007. Haven't listened to either band since. Just incredibly boring shows.

I saw Tool in Fairfax, Virginia about 5 years ago and was let down too. I went in to it really pumped and it just sort of dragged on without much energy.
Then saw Puscifer in DC within a year of that and the show was great.

I went to see Zac Brown Band a few years ago (not really a fan, but figured I'd go for the party). They were so-so, other than some great covers. But Blackberry Smoke opened for them and were awesome. Had a blast at the show, but enjoyed the 30 minute opener and the party more than the headliner.

I saw the smashing pumpkins in the 90s and I agree. They were awful.

I don't understand how primus could be boring live.
Brosef: what was boring about primus?

They are not the band I remember from the 90s. It was just a bunch of long, rambling jam sessions. I think I only recognized a few songs. They didn't even play My Name is Mud. It didn't help that it went on so late. Show ended at about 2:30 AM, first two bands were some more boring jam type stuff so I was kinda tired when Primus started.

well damn, that does suck (not in a good way)
I last saw primus in 2000 in new orleans

Saw them at the Orange Peel here in Asheville and they brought the house down. Great show! Best concert I have ever seen was Van Halen in Shreveport in 1982 Diver Down tour. AC/DC in 1986 Who Made Who a close second.
