For us old folks:

"In its first week of release, “Ode” sold 750,000 copies, knocking “All You Need Is Love” out of the top spot on the Billboard chart. It stayed there for four weeks. The song won Gentry three Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist (she was the first Country artist to ever win in this category)."

Great song. I could sing it in it's entirety before I could talk. Or close to that anyway. Ode to Billy Joe and Patches by Clarence Carter Clarence Carter Clarence Carter oooh shite Clarence Carter. Thanks mom.

I love that song. I always wondered if she grew up in Greenwood why the song talks about the Carroll County picture show.

Grandparents lived in Greenwood, I caught alot fish on the Tallahatchie river back in the day.

The speculation about the story is interesting. One theory even has the narrator being male.
