An album full of "covers" was relatively common among startup bands at the time.

If Zeppelin hadn't hit it as big as they did nobody would care, and I am under the impression they paid most of those original artists.

I think a lot of people fail to realize this. And it can be kind of hard to trace the original writer of a blues tune since many were old gospel songs and had evolved for many years through many different artists.

Well, Richard Ashcroft is also kind of an a-hole.

Still love the entire Verve catalogue though.

HUGE a-hole. He gives Noel Gallagher a run for his money.

Well, sure. Bittersweet Symphony wasn't the only great song they made. Urban Hymns sold ten million albums -- and deservedly so, as it is an absolutely fantastic album -- and I imagine that was enough to steer them clear of the local unemployment services office.

But that doesn't make it any less of a screw job. Bittersweet Symphony was an absolute cash cow for the slimy bag of shite Allen Klein. Not just the royalties -- which were substantial -- but advertising revenue, revenue from placement in movies, etc.

Basically, Ashcroft would have Oasis-type money if he hadn't gotten the Dick Sandwich on Bittersweet Symphony.

No doubt, just saying there are tons of artists that never received a red cent for their music...

Two other bands who had members royally fricked over by management:
The Band
Badfinger (extremely depressing)

CCR

I don't think I know this story.

Their original record contract was famous for being one of the worst in American band history. They essentially got paid jack squat, while having the little money they did make put into some stupid tax scheme, only to have that money jacked from them, to settle in court and still not recoup most of the money iirc.

Did they win? No fricking way they won.

They didn't but I'm pretty sure it wasn't the remaining members that sued. I believe it was Fantasy Records. They owned the rights to the songs and brought the suit.

Correct. Saul Zaentz (Fantasy Records) talked Fogerty into investing in the scheme then let their money go bye-bye.

Yeah, the suits usually bring the suits. But the premise of that lawsuit is like the most ridiculous thing I've heard all week. It doesn't even pass the straight-face test.
