No Sammy Haggar era. Real VH. Fair Warning and Diver Down are 1a and 1b for me. 1984 wasnt bad but different.

What say you?

I am partial to VH II

But since that was my 1984th post, I'll change it to 1984!!

VHI
VHII
5150
1984
Fair Warning

Diver Down had 5 covers and two instrumentals under 2:00. Clearly the weakest of the DLR era.

van halen I followed by ii. their debut was unlike anything people had ever heard. it, like "are you experienced" and the "beano" album changed the way guitar players approached the instrument.
those two records are great from start to finish, every record after that--until 5150, had a few good tunes scattered throughout a lot of filler.
5150 is right there with van halen I as being my two favorite vh records.

Van Halen
Women and Children First.

I just love In a Simple Rhyme and Take Your Whiskey Home. The start of the album with Cradle Will Rock is killer.

Debut album cause it set the tone that all other VH albums had to live up to.

I like II better now, but you are right about the visceral impact of I. When that came through the speakers (especially Atomic Punk), I really did not know what had happened to me or the world.

Instrumentals? Any chance to hear Eddie jam is a good thing.
Covers? Who cares as long as the knock them out the park, which they did.

I'd rather listen to Diver Down over I or II. It's stronger start to finish than those two.

No way! Diver Down is clearly the weakest of the DLR canon.

Agreed, but god damn, Hang 'Em High, is such a killer tune. Very underrated VH song.
