Nirvana followed by Mudhoney...

Love Battery as a wild card...

Also, though they were power pop, The Posies were better than most of the other Seattle bands mentioned in this thread, from that era..

Pearl Jam was and still is my favorite. They just continue to pump out innovative music over 20 years after hitting the scene. In fact, "Sirens" may be my favorite track by them.

"Alive" was the song that epitomized the sound iMO. First time I heard it, I knew something had changed

Because of their commercial success, and the dark tone of their music, Nirvana never gets the credit they deserve as the pioneers of the return to prominence of rock music in the 90's.

They are easily the most misunderstood rock band of all time. If you play any of their records, their music is 100% pure rock n' roll, and their sound is still as fresh today as it was the day it was recorded. Only a few bands have such a timelessness.

Nirvana is easily the best band of the Seattle Grunge movement.

1. Nirvana
2. Pearl Jam
3. Soundgarden
4. AIC
5. The Screaming Trees
6. Temple of the Dog

1. AIC by far the best of the era, especially the EP's; scheck out Cantrell's solo stuff for some great music.
2. Soundgarden music has aged well--- grunge mixed with metal
3. Temple of the Dog lightning in a bottle, just perfect
4. STP plenty of hits

5 & 6 Nirvana, crappiest excuse for guitar playing I have ever heard; Dave Grol ROCKED the skins. Pearl Jam...Sloppiest excuse for singing since Bob Dylan. Just garble like you have a mouthful of marbles and wear flannel. 10 was great, but it went downhill quickly. At least the guitar playing was pretty good.

A band must be from the Seattle area in the late 80s or very early 90s to be considered "Grunge."

STP is "Alternative Rock"

I have to go with Alice in Chains.

IMO it's this and it ain't even close but I have a problem calling AIC grunge.

That vocal harmony between Layne Staley & Jerry Cantrell was a thing of beauty. Lyrical content was solid music wasn't a banging power chord.

The lyrics were dark and you knew exactly where Layne was in his addictions.

STP were the best band of this genre (although snobs and max volumers will say they aren't true grunge)

Really stupid IMO. We're not talking about fricking Chianti here STP were from West Coast (CA I believe) and were already touring and spending a lot of time in the Pac NW during that time.

Scott Weiland probably the most underrated front man of our generation - dude is legend and has amazing pipes. One of the last true rock stars - now we get Chris Martin preaching about fair trade and eating tofu and the boring arse dudes from Arcade Fire and Muse and Brandon Flowers dressing like Steve Urkel and doing commercials for Mormonism. Rock is dead.

The term was coined by an English journalist to describe the Seattle scene.

Weiland really is a great front man. The thing about STP is they aren't from the area and they honestly sound nothing like them. I mean, I understand lumping in other like souls, but STP was practically a glam band.

Then again, so was Mother Love Bone. MLB is probably the band that seems the most dated to me, as they were pushing a style of music that was just about to die: they really toed the line of 80s hair metal. They were putting a different spin on it, but they would have fit comfortably in that scene had the Second Punk Revolution never happened.

But of course, Andy Wood died and the members formed Pearl Jam, which is still a pretty straight arena rock band, but at least sounded close to the more punk-y stuff their bretheren were pumping out. I honestly think "grunge" never explodes to the mainstream with Andy Wood dying. Pearl Jam was the perfect gateway drug to the underground, as they had a lot more in common with mainstream arena rock, but hey had enough punk elements to feel like they belonged to the "scene". they are the connective tissue.

Without Pearl Jam, Nirvana is just a really popular punk band, Soundgarden is lumped in with the SoCal SST bands (that was their label), and Alice in Chains is considered a 80s holdover. And Mudhoney and Screaming Trees never sign with a major label. It's Pearl Jam having consistency with every other band, even when they don't with each other, that made it seem like this one huge scene. PJ was always the safest option, which also makes it logical they would have the longest, most successful career.

Kind of how I feel about Alive. I was never big on Pearl Jam after Ten but I swear the Avocado album is greatness. My favorite one.

I think AIC's Dirt album is about the pinnacle of grunge music.

Nobody wants to mention Candlebox?

Just coming to post that.

Pearl Jam is still good. And to whoever posted about 'Sirens', it is a good song from a good album.

I don't know if STP qualifies as I think they are from California..... but I like some STP. 'Shangri La Dee Da' is an underrated album.

Saw Sondgarden open for GNR in the early 90's and they were atrocious live.

You shoulda been as lucky as me. I saw them on that same Badmotorfinger tour but in a very different setting. GNR played in Tampa and then three or so days later in Miami. Luckily for Jacksonville, one of the more iconic bars in this town's history, The Milk Bar (a downtown basement bar that brought in great acts), secured a date from them in between the two shows with GNR.

And a PHENOMENAL show it was!!!
