Nirvana, I know I'll get shite for this but what Nirvana did in the short span of time was unrivaled.

Yes, it could have a lot to do with MTV ordaining them so early on, but they had the pop cross over appeal.

Nevermind is a masterpiece in music and production quality.

Pearl Jam was and still is my favorite. They just continue to pump out innovative music over 20 years after hitting the scene. In fact, "Sirens" may be my favorite track by them.

I saw Nirvana live twice and both were incredible shows. To say they were a product of MTV is ridiculous. They were an insanely talented band that came along at the right time when audiences had tired of the hair band scene.

That said, Pearl Jam was always my favorite from the grunge scene.

There are hundreds of talented bands that never hit it big. MTV promotion of Nirvana is not a ridiculous concept at all. Remember...they actually played videos back then. If Smells Like Teen Spirit wouldn't have been played 100 times a day I don't think they would have ever made the splash that they did. There really isn't an argument that MTV was a huge key to their success.

If we start doing that then STP needs to be mentioned.

AIC
Soundgarden
Pearl Jame

Nirvana

Melvins aren't exactly grunge IMO

That wasn't entirely at the discretion of MTV. Smells Like Teen Spirit was very popular with viewers, and was a regular on Dial MTV(request call-in format show) at the time.

Sure, but they weren't entirely a product of MTV, as has been intimated in this thread.

Down on the Upside is one of the most uninspired, pedestrian releases

Damn. I can listen to DOTUS, Badmotorfinger or Superunknown on loop. I think all three of them are great.

My vote is for Soundgarden.

Early Pearl Jam
Nirvana
AIC
Soundgarden

...all bring different sounds so ranking them is very stupid and is based soley on ones taste. Those are my top 4. All amazing musicians in excellent bands.

Saw Sondgarden open for GNR in the early 90's and they were atrocious live.
I saw them at lollapalooza at uno fairgrounds in 96 along with Metallica, screaming trees, & rage, soundgarden sucked, they just stood there the whole show like their feet were stuck on stage. its a shame because I love their music, but they are bad to watch live.

Da frick?

Why don't you just list any band and add a disclaimer.

REM (even though they weren't really grunge and from all the way across the continent)

Silver Chair (just b/c they were from australia and can't believe dude was 16 singing that)

Tool (even though they aren't associated with grunge and they use math equations)
