I want a good beginner guitar and let's keep it reasonable. I'll need some sort of amp also.

You can find an Epi SG for $150 on craigslist. Good tone, easy to play.

ETA: If you are looking for a bass, I'd go with an Squier Jazz Bass. Can't tell if you're asking for a guitar or bass.

If you want absolute new AND a good value - Ibanez is difficult to beat. They sell a combo with a tuner, amp, accessories.

Most of it is disposable (including the amp) over the long haul, but you'll get a surprisingly long life out of the bass, itself, IMHO.

This is what I'm talking about - under $300 out the door.

You should be able to find this at your local Ibanez dealer, as well, if you don't like the internet route.

ETA: And this is a bass recommendation - sorry if I misread your OP.

What are you looking to spend?

I always go Squier for entry level. Cool body styles and backed by Fender.

Ibanezes might be good, but damn they always look like progressive metal gear.

Meh - depends. The boy has an Ibanez electric that kind of looks like a Les Paul, Jr. The basses are fairly conventional looking as well - the headstock is a little wonky, but they have to be after all the lawsuits.

Bass. Considering the Squier, Yamaha and Ibanez. Willing to spend around $250 or so just on the bass. The lesser the better in case I lose interest fast.

I bought THIS about a year and a half ago (except with a humbucking pick up).

I'd find a nice used OLP bass with a used 2-10 Ampeg combo. Think you'll be out the door around $400 and have a great sounding setup that you easily get 100% of money back out of.

Could some seasoned bassists provide their thoughts on Fender basses - jazz bass versus p-bass? I'm thinking about getting one but have only limited experience playing each.

What is your preference and why?

I prefer a P-Bass where I used to love jazz basses. Jazz is more versatile, but the P has that THUMP to it.

Mexi Jazz basses sound too thin too me now.
