Have any of y'all met or know Phil Anselmo, of Pantera and Down fame? I've never met him, but I think he would be a cool dude to hang out with.

He went to the same school as Ellen DeGeneres...and my mom.

Some metal heads think he's a bit of a dick.

I've met his sister. She's a friend of some friends.

At her wedding a good friend of mine met Phil. He's supposedly a huge a-hole.

He should join Slayer onstage Friday night for Voodoo fest if he's in town. Would be cool

i'd be pretty shocked to learn that he's anything but the humble, soft-spoken guy he portrays in his lyrics.

Yeah according to most accounts he's still an a-hole. He was much worse when he was still on heroin.

LINK

quote:

One day, at the airport, Phil let one go. “It was a real juicy fart, right? And I was like, ‘Man, you need to be careful, man. I think you may have shite your pants.’ And I guess he didn’t register that it was a joke, and he turned around, and he goes [Edit: Wingo does a phenomenal Anselmo], ‘I will tell you if its a wet one.’ Like that. And I was like, ‘OK. Sorry. It was just a joke.’ Then, he was wearing a cross one day, and I was kind of making fun of his cross at the airport. I thought we were peers and it was OK.”

quote:

But Wingo was on Phil’s shitlist, and raising the man’s ire with every word he muttered. “We were at this restaurant one night and I said something to him. I was passing him in a hallway, and I was just like, ‘Hey, what’s up, dog?’ and dude grabbed me by the throat and was holding me by my fricking neck man, and he goes, ‘You will address me like a white man.’ And he didn’t let go of my neck, and I was standing there — frozen in fear. I didn’t know what was going on. I was like, ‘So, what should I call you?’ and he goes, ‘You will call me Philip or dude.’ And I was like, ‘I will call you dude from now on, man.’ He let me go and I got away with that one. That was cool.”

quote:

Minutes later, Metallica informed both Down and The Sword that they’d be doing U.S. dates. “I was in our dressing room, and dude comes over, and I think he was pissed off about us being on the bill. We were this new young band and he was fricking Phil Anselmo and he was entitled and we didn’t deserve to be there. He comes over like he’s going to give me a hug, and he goes, ‘Prepare to get your fricking arse blown off the stage.’ And I went, ‘What?,’ and right when I said that, he just slapped my face, man — like, so hard. He slapped my glasses off. They flew across the room. I was just standing there, stunned, face burning from the hard slap, and it was loud; you could hear it all down the hallway, and everyone turned around, and I am just standing there frozen and Phil is like, ‘You will respect me! You will know your place!,’ and he starts yelling at me, doing this whole thing, and these dudes came over and dragged him off somewhere.

He is probably an arse but it seems like he could be a fun guy as well. Check out his latest with Metal Grasshopper.

I did some legal work for a small label that was courting him shortly after he got clean.

One of those people that could go off at any time. And when I say off I mean a violent rage, just seemed his was barely in control.

He was barred from attending Dimebag's funeral, if that tells you anything

He was barred from Dime's funeral because of what went down with Pantera. Rita, who is Dime's widow, and Vinnie were furious with Phil because of how he had let them all down with the dissolution of Pantera and how it affected Dime. It got so bad that they weren't speaking to each other at all in the years leading up to Dime's death. Also, a big part of the tension was that Phil said some very negative things about Dime and Vinnie in the press, so that added to the rift. So it wasn't because of his personality or whatever that made him not welcome at Dimebag's funeral, it was the huge rift that had come between them. Vinnie Paul still refuses to have anything to do with Phil to this day, while I think Rita has forgiven him and moved on.

I've smoked bud with him and talked about old horror films, old band and the saints. If you're cool, then, you're cool.

And

I'd much rather listen to or see a show by The Sword rather than Down or anything else Phil's done lately.
