1. The Shining
2. The Thing
3. The Hitcher

1 & 2 may as well be tied for me. Though, I could talk about the shining for hours. I much prefer Kubrick's vision.

Loved cannibal holocaust. Ferox as well. (I'm a Giovanni Lombardo Radice fan though, which also brings me to like cannibal apocalypse, the house on the edge of the park and gates of hell.)

1. A Nightmare on Elm Street - It's the quintessential 80's horror film. It includes the most iconic of the modern horror villains, a very 80's tone, and it's part of the early explosion of more indie films.

2. The Thing - Well, the thing is one of the greatest films of all time, so it belongs here regardless.

3. The Fly - I think this one is both rooted in its decade, but timeless all at the same time. Underrated for sure.

Just Missed Evil Dead 1&2, The Shining (I don't think it's really 80's enough), Poltergeist, Friday the 13th, Re-animator, Return of the Living Dead

I will never understand the love for this film. Premise is great but the actual execution, in my opinion, is lacking.

I enjoy the Thing and appreciate why people love it

but it never really scared me

The Fly is similar in a way, but I love the Fly. When I was a kid, I had nightmares about the ending where he transports and becomes fused with part of the pod. I think that helped keep the Fly up there as a horror movie for me. Waking up upset in the middle of the night

If that's the criteria, Silver Bullet scarred me for years. For a long time it was the single scariest movie I had ever seen, but I hated scary movies and were terrified by them, so I didn't watch many.

It's funny because I love them so much now. But Silver Bullet fricked me up as a kid. That scene in the fog had me .

Well I also think Cronenberg does a fantastic job at playing up man's need to fly too high. It's such a mythical premise (I mean really,it's just Icarus right?) that's hidden right behind the film. And I think this version of it is a rare version for horror.

And it's just a well done film.

From a fear aspect I just expect so much more from John Carpenter.

As a horror fan, particularly 80s horror I couldnt even do this if I thought for hours. I do think that the Thing and The Shining are two of the best horror movies of all time but they arent the ones I go back to the most.

I will throw in The Beyond for discussion though, such an amazing movie. Also, the recent blu ray releases for Cannibal Holocaust and Ferox are two of the better packages I've seen on the market. Great stuff.
