Forrest and Neo: A Match Made in Heaven

It’s that time again folks. No I don’t mean it’s time for your coffee enema, on the contrary, it’s time for you to shove your opinion right up everyone else’s butt. Why do I say that? Because we are talking about the 90’s. If I would take a guess on this board, then in this backwards time travel of decades, the 90’s and 80’s are going to be the most contested decades. Mostly, it’s because that was the time we all grew up. For many of us, the 90’s was the decade of adolescence. We hold those year very close to our hearts. So it will be emotional. Tempers will flare. People will have their feelings hurt. Internet badassery will commence.

While we do remember the good stuff, it was the great stuff that made the 1990’s special. Common belief holds the 90’s up there with the 50’s and 70’s in terms of movie quality. And 1994 and 1999 are some of the single best years of film of all-time. How great are the 90’s? A decade following the pressure of the post-decadence of the 80’s. The information age revving up. The unwieldy throws of the grunge movement. Slacker culture reigned supreme. Well, again, how do we define it? What did it mean? And more importantly...

And I ask the question again: How will the decade be remembered? Well, first let's find 100 Movies We Agree Don't Suck, and we'll take it from there.

Without delay, let's get down to the rules, as normal:

Ballots will be posted in this thread as a response. Please label your films 1-20, with 1 being the highest, 2 next and so forth (doesn't matter how you list them, forwards or backwards, but make sure 1 is your top film). I will let the thread sink in for a week or so, then I will lock in answers with an announcement (as in, "NO FURTHER CHANGES FROM NOW ON) I will bump this thread daily until the first list is posted, I'm sure it will take a couple of days to start getting lists in.*

ONLY FILMS RELEASED BETWEEN JANUARY 1, 1990 and DECEMEBER 31, 1999 will be considered. ALL OTHER FILMS ARE UNQUALIFIED. Check the dates of the films you include

I am also taking the list of volunteers for write-ups. You know the drill. If you love film and want to unleash your Shakespearean eloquence upon the masses, sign up.

Writers:
Freauxzen
Baloo
iwyLSUiwy
etm512
H-Town Tiger

Have at it folks.

NOTE: DO NOT DOUBLE POST YOUR LIST, JUST EDIT YOUR ORIGINAL POST IF YOU NEED TO.

How about I just sticky it? And put me on the writer's list, man. This is going to be an epic smackdown.

It's about damn time. Me, Jamohn, and Iwy could only argue about flying, moustached sharks and industrious, indestructible, castrated bears for so long.

My list is damn near finalized. Will probably post in a day or two.

Thanks. You can probably archive the 2000's too.

Done.

I'll start:

Jackie Brown is superior to Pulp Fiction.

I agree. So I'll one up you.

While Sheakespeare in Love had no business being the Best Picture, neither did Saving Private Ryan which, outside of its outstanding opening sequenece, is a fairly pedestrain film. Go.

The Ave Ventura movies are the most over rated comedies ever. Nothing but annoying sounds and over acting. Never have liked them.

I think we knew that, we agree just about 95% of the time. We are both waiting for the Taratino and SVP folks to show up and be flabbergasted.

I may regret voting so early as I am sure to miss some quality movies but my top 20:

Some really good movies didn't make the cut. Some movies may not be on anyone else's radar...but frick it...there were a lot of quality movies that came out in the 1990's but these 20 are movies I could watch on a loop for eternity and enjoy it.

So without further ado my list.
1. Lion King
2. Shawshank Redemption
3. Toy Story
4. The Usual Suspects
5. Terminator 2: Judgement Day
6. Silence of the Lambs
7. Braveheart
8. Forrest Gump
9. The Matrix
10. The Fugitive
11. Se7en
12. Groundhog Day
13. Jurassic Park
14. The Big Lebowski
15. Schindler's List
16. A Few Good Men
17. Dumb and Dumber
18. Nightmare before Christmas
19. Pulp Fiction
20. Fight Club

I heard people say this and thought they were nuts but you're actually right. I caught some of it on HBO The Ocho the other week and it was not as funny as I once remembered.

i almost didn't want this thread to happen because jesus effiny christmas i don't know how i'm going to:
1) narrow it down to 20
2) rank those 20

the 80's will be more of a sentimental journey maybe but damn there's some serious comp in the 90's.

Narrowing it down is a lot tougher than ranking I found. There are some I left off that I couldn't believe I did.
