I never said I'd kill Fredo. I said in an earlier thread I wouldn't have. Was just trying to give the guy that said Tom should have been killed some perspective on Tom's value.

Awesome thread. Loved reading everyone's posts. Really makes me want to go back and read the book/watch the movies again.

I don't think I'd kill Fredo. Just don't have it in me to go against the family like that.

Was I the only one who thought about this Seinfeld episode?

The Strongbox" is the 170th episode of the NBC sitcom Seinfeld. ... Kramer of Fredo's death; to which Kramer exclaims that "Fredo was weak and stupid!

The authorized prequel written by another novelist-can't think of the title or the author's name-delves into Fredo's background. He's destined for the priesthood until he's molested by a priest, and his dysfunctional personality stems from that. In the books, Fredo is also not nearly as inept a character as he is in the movies. He is legitimately a threat to Michael, at least potentially.

outside of Puzo's novel, none of that is canon and came well after the movies anyhow. Fredo is just not that smart, whether it was because he was sickly as a kid or not i really never gave much thought to. That he froze when the Don was attacked and was humiliated by Moe Green, yet defended him should suffice as examples he was weak.

I personally enjoyed the post-Puzo novels, but they aren't essential to the overall GF universe.

This. He could have just let him live in the Lake Tahoe guest house and fish all day. Do you think Fredo knew he was fixing to get whacked when Anthony was called away?

Fredo might have been dumb, but it couldn't have been THAT dumb. When istead of you and your nephew in the boat, it's you and Al Neri, you gotta know you're fricked.

to me the better question is how didn't Connie figure it out? She figured out Michael killed Carlo when she wasn't there. She calls Anthony away and knows Fredo is out there with Neri and only Neri comes back.

She knew, Fredo was gay and his actions were endangering the family business. Tom did all he could.

does she? There is a scene in Part III with just her and Michael where she says something about thinking of poor Fredo drowned or something like that. Maybe she was just saying that so he doesn't feel guilty that's what's done is done?

I always interpreted that as sarcasm.

I feel like this was deliberately ambiguous.

I think she did, and was in denial.

He may have been bangin' cocktail waitresses two at a time, but he also seemed pretty excited about seeing Superman's dick again. Fredo was a switch hitter.

i dug out the DVD and watched that scene. I really don't know how you could interpret Connie's comments as sarcasm.

Michael tells her he confessed his sins to the Cardinal. And she asks why, to a stranger etc like Sonny and others said to him in the other movies. Then she talks about how she thinks of poor Fredo, drowned and its sad but over, so maybe she was telling Michael she knows without telling him she knows and that it is OK, she forgives him or understands or something like that.

I always interpreted what Connie said as straight up denial. She knew what happened. It was one of those dark family secrets that nobody talks about and that they use an alternate cover story, and by repeating that cover story over and over they actually believe it at some point to be true. The family is lying to themselves and believing the lie.

My first thought was, "No, I couldn't kill my brother."

Then I realized that Fredo had put Michael's kids in the line of gunfire.

So now I'm thinking I'd kill him. You can't just banish him, because he knows too much. He's stupid enough to go to the feds. Michael was right. This is business.
