Dammit man, grow up.
Tom Cruise has gone all action and it's undeniable. In some ways he's become a parody. But he showed early on, that he has more to offer.
Why this offends you is beyond me.

Rock of Ages wasn't that long ago... The movie wasn't fantastic, but it was watchable and he played his role of Stacee Jax pretty well.
Was definitely a different type of movie and role for him.

Cruise specifically did Tropic Thunder to lighten and rehab his image after the Oprah/Scientology stuff. He went all over town meeting with comedic writers and talents trying to figure out the right role. Seth Rogen told Stern this years ago... said he meet with Cruise before Stiller did and Rogen said he was just weird and they couldn't find any common ground.
I also heard a few years ago Bill Simmons on his podcast ask this very same question (Simons is a huge Cruise fan) He said that he wanted to see Cruise in a real role again, but his podcast guest ( can't remember who, but someone with real Hollywood knowledge) said that Cruise will never be cast in a "real" role again because his public image is so damaged and he is viewed as so weird he's uncastable as a "real" person anymore.
He said audiences simply can't buy Cruise as dad or brother or regular, simple guy ...he's so strange that he can only do action star stuff.

He was pretty good in Magnolia.
Posted on 9/27/16 at 6:52 pm to TideSaint
Magnolia was 17 yrs ago....the OP is talking about Cruise's last 12+ yrs where he's just playing "Tom Cruise"

Tom Cruise tends to star in good shite. He does his own stunts as well, and some badass ones at that. Rouge Nation was ridiculously better than Spectre last year. It had the same plot, but the execution of it was infinitely better and more organic. Aside from his personal beliefs, I have no problem with Tom Cruise continuing down this road of being an action star. He's pretty great at it.

filmed locally, he was at a LSUgame last year while filming.

Cruise's movies still make a ton of money while doing solid work. This is just an attempt at looking like a movie snob.
Vanilla Sky is a "real" movie? frick off.

When he's done trying to prove he's still young he'll probably line up something like The Revenant or even play a bad guy like Denzel in Training Day to shoot for an Oscar.

That was sort of my angle.
It's not Top Gun anymore. He showed he can be more. I just think he's become typecast...by his own fault. I don't know if anyone would take him seriously in a drama.

He was the bad guy in Collateral and was excellent. It was an Oscar caliber performance.

He's tried to win an Oscar twice in his career. The late 80s with Rain Man and 4th of July and then the mid-late 90s with Jerry Maguire, Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut, and Vanilla Sky.
Each time he went on a significant action, popcorn movie tear after said "oscar period"... It's like he just said "frick this drama acting shite... I'm going to go make 5 blockbusters and $100 million... Plus I get to jump out of planes and ride motorcycles...you can have your damned Oscar"

Well, that was wrong... Extremely wrong since he's playing a real "real" role in Barry Seal

Right, Barry Seal was real, but he's kind of a mythic, crazy character...Seal was an ex CIA operative turned drug runner for Columbian Cartels... Far from an ordinary person.
I think what the guy was trying to say is that Cruise can't play a "regular guy" or nurturing father role anymore, really character driven stuff.
Charlie Babbitt or something like Dustin Hoffman in Kramer vs Kramer comes to mind.

I know who Barry Seal is
And you can change up the definition of a "real" guy all you want, but playing a real person in a true story based movie is pretty damn real, especially compared to his last run of roles in only popcorn blockbusters

Lets all hope TC doesn't venture to TD and visit the MTV to see your post. I'm sure he'll be so bothered by 'internet guy' to where he'll have a mental breakdown, retire, and fade into obscurity just like you predicted. But this time, it'll be because of you.

What's wrong with being the biggest and best action star in the world?
As a wise man one said - never half arse two things, whole arse one thing

Maybe the church of Scientology is draining him dry and he has to take nothing but blockbuster action flicks
But seriously, regardless of how much we despise him as a person, the man is a great actor and can pretty much do whatever he wants now.
