Futhermore, a standing army has to be fed, clothed, and housed. If they're not fighting, it's an economic drain, and feudal societies were pretty hardscrabble. There weren't any rich kings. They were greasy, hairy tribal chieftains living in dark, drafty, cold stone forts. They couldn't afford an army even if they wanted one.

And, a standing army is a risk to you. If they're not off fighting your neighbors-which gets you targeted as a regional troublemaker-they're standing around bored, and they may get dangerous ideas about who really should be running things.

I bet they were a lot more badass when Blackfyre commanded them
Yeah, I've also gotten the impression that their effectiveness varied based on the times and who commanded them.

They did run like homosexual deer during The Blackwater, though.

They haven't reached that stage of political development yet.

Good points. And you can't trust the numbers from kingdoms that did have standing armies, since ancients were highly prone to exaggeration.

A lot of "great battles" in history would have been considered more like border skirmishes today.

One important factor the show only touches on is the role mercenary armies. They were a big deal in late medieval and renaissance times.

gold cloaks are 2000

Wow. I didn't realize they're were that many of them. As you said though, still not enough.

The gold cloaks are the City Watch not Kings Gaurd of which there are supposed to be 7.

The soldiers would be more loyal to their liege lords and their own people than to the crown if it came down to choosing between the two. In addition most of these soldiers are farmers and other regular people. They only take up arms when called upon by their lords.

Bronn was GOAT Gold Cloak commander
quote:

Varys: "I must complement you on the Gold Cloak's performance these past few weeks. Did you know there's been a marked drop in thievery?"
Tyrion: "I did not know. And how did you accomplish this marked drop in thievery?"
Bronn: "Me and the Lads rounded up all the known thieves."
Tyrion: "For questioning?"
Bronn: "Ah.....no"

We talked about this

Augustus had to conquer Egypt to pay for his army. They are very expensive. Hence why rich men such as Crassus and Pompey became generals. They could afford to field their own armies.
