Why is the movie North so universally despised and crapped on

and considered such a God awful movie?
Full disclosure: I haven't seen it in probably 20 years, and I probably have a soft spot for it because I used to watch it with my dad on VHS a lot and he really liked it.
With that said, I'm NOT saying it's some awesome movie that should be widely acclaimed and loved on and showered with praise. BUT, the absolute hatred for this movie confuses me. It is typically the butt of jokes, and most are probably familiar with the aboslute raping that roger ebert gave it, calling it "one of the worst movies ever made"
Why? It never tried to be anythign more than what it was; a feel good, family movie that coudl be enjoyed by kids and parents. And I mean, it's got some redeeming qualities. Pretty stellar cast, all things considered, featuring elijah wood, bruce willis, dan akroyd, reba mcentire, john ritter, scarjo, jason alexander, julia louis dreyfuss, etc. It was a good story, talking about appreciating the family you're dealt. And it was fairly unique concept that was done pretty well IMO.
Can someone shed some light? Again, I'm not saying it's badass or anything, I just don't get why it is considered to be SOOOO AWFUL. There are far, far worse movies out there making millions in the box office, and I don't get that either.

Because it's insulting, incredibly racist, incredibly xenophobic, and it cops out in the end with it all being a dream. It is a god awful piece of shite and probably ranks in my top 10 most hated films.

I'm a caucasian male from MS, so it didn't insult me personally, but I can see why it would piss off minorities. At least make it funny, and this film failed miserably at it.
Granted, I didn't see the movie until my 20s, so I may have missed something as a kid, but I hated this movie immediately.

well yeah, I'd say that's obvious. I mean it's a kids/family movie with a 12 year old and his family as the central point of the plot. I will forever and always have a soft spot for rookie of the year and little big league, but if I watched them for the first time ever as an adult, I'd probably get bored halfway through and turn it off.

Scarjo was terrible in this film. I was surprised to see her have a career after her performance. She acted as if she was an inexperienced child.

I know this is a joke, right?

Well, if I remember correctly, most of the things they were being xenophobic about took place in America, specifically Texas, Hawaii, and Alaska. In the Alaska sequence they pretty much did blackface, but with eskimos.

Well, that would make sense.

It's remembered as being such a horrible movie probably mostly because of the Ebert review. It became iconic as a horrible movie because of that review. Otherwise people probably would not remember it at all for the most part.

The cast is full of well known actors which makes it even worse. I mean, how does Rob Reiner go from A Few Good Men to North?

Xenophobic is showing a dislike or prejudice towards things. The movie didn't do that, it played up the stereotypes of those families.
The texas family was as TEXAS as it can get; cattle ranch, big steaks for dinner, big song and dance number.
Hawaii family lived on the beach, roasted a pig, had a luau with belly dancers at a bonfire.
Eskimo family lived in the deserted iceland in an igloo and used sled dogs for transportation.
Were those portrayals extreme? Of course, it's a movie. I wouldn't call them racist or xenophobic in the slightest bit though.

I remember seeing the movie on HBO about 20 years ago, but I don't remember much about it other than Bruce Willis dressed like an Easter bunny. But, you're right, back in the day, when Ebert ripped your film a new one, it typically got a bad reputation. Ishtar comes to mind. He mentioned that one in interviews for years.
