I just don't care about any of these characters yet. The pilot episode of TWD is a sympathy grab for Rick Grimes. He's been rendered comatose, comes out, the world has gone to shite and he's lost his family. You're rooting for this guy and his quest to find his wife and son from the outset, and then the story and ancillary characters build off of that.

In this show, they wanted to show how mundane, everyday life suddenly is infiltrated by the outbreak. However, that very aspect of the story kind of begs for things to start out dull. It's especially dull when the audience is anticipating something as significant as what's to come.

Challenging issue for the writers to deal with. Hopefully, things will improve on the character building front.

The problem is the characters. TV shows and movies in general seem to have a hard time locating someone between idiot and invincible badass. Most of the people in this show seem to be very far on the "idiots" side of the spectrum and I don't really care about any of them yet.

I am glad they are taking a somewhat slow burn w/ the zombie action, I just wish the characters were better. Stubborn and close-minded seem to be the defining characteristics of most of them.

What I would like to see is people who are making good decisions, but still getting screwed sometimes b/c of the circumstances.

Travis did not help himself on this board with his anti-gun comments in an earlier episode. Still, I liked him last night. He is acting totally like any one of us would. The military is there to protect them, we should listen to the authorities and wha tthey tell us to do. You could tell that in his interaction with the Colonel when dude was hitting golfballs. Actually apologized about the info he gave him about somebody being out there signalling his son. He was slowly starting to turn towards distrusting the military presence, then they raided his house and took his stepson, then he saw them raid, and presumably shoot, the person who had been signalling. Travis is changing.

That's sort of how I feel about it too. With only a couple episodes left I don't know if enough can be done to make me feel differently about it. But we'll see. I'm enjoying it but I'm definitely ready for the real Walking Dead to start back up.

Yes you would act like him. You would act just like all of them are, penned up little sheep, listening and doing what you are told. The government is there to protect you and is working on returning order. And you would believe every part of it.

Now, would I put a bear hug on my neighbor who I just came across munching a dog? No, i don't think any one of us would act as stupidly as he did. But in his dealings with the authorities, yes, we would act the same way.

Heck, people in the episode thread were calling the lady stupid for cutting the fence and going out on a little day walk.
