Troy starring Brad Pitt and Eric Bana came on TV the other day. I remembered back to when this movie was first coming out...People thought it was going to be the next Gladiator (In terms of being a badass great movie that may even win Best Picture)

Instead, it turned out to be "meh"

I remember people saying it needed "Ridley Scott's touch"

Idk. What all went wrong with this movie? I know Orlando Bloom was a total fail in the movie. But it had a great cast and the source material is great as well.

Why was it so..."meh"

I love Troy, very entertaining movie. It just didn't have near the backstory and plot to really be critically acclaimed like Gladiator did

Me 2. It's not Citizen Kane or even quite Gladiator but I thought it achieved what it went after. It didn't have the heart to be a great movie, but it's a decent one.

I've never been a fan of Troy. I don't know why. Maybe because Troy leans toward fantasy with Gladiator being more believable.

Both are bad movies, but Pitt's overacting made Troy a great unintentional comedy

Yeah this is kind of what I meant. Gladiator packed a punch that Troy just didn't. Troy aimed more to please your senses. It was big and beautiful. Gladiator was gritty and dramatic.

Troy was too shiny and clean. There's nothing wrong with Pitt that I can put into words, except he just didn't have "it" for Achilles. Gladiator had blood and sweat and violence and it did seem more real. Yeah, Troy needed grit.

it pissed off certain critics due to how it handled the source material (which is bullshite)

it was kind of hokey and pitt was not good in it. bana was excellent as usual, though

to an extent, achilles doesn't translate to modern society. he really was a whiney fricking bitch in the illiad. the attack on his honor doesn't translate to modern society, imho.

the production values/cinematography weren't as high as gladiator. i can give troy a pass somewhat because a typhoon completely wrecked their original locations/settings

kige the frick out of this

Also maybe Troys problem is Achilles is an unlikeable character. I mean I was pissed when he died only because Paris was the one who killed him and he sucked arse.

I mean I knew what was going to happen because of the actual mythology but they didn't have to make both of them such bitches
