Where would you rank Gregor clegane amongst the best fighters in westeros

In single combat he has to be a top 5 all time imo because of how freakishly large he is. It would almost be like going 1 on 1 with a giant. There's only so much skill can do for you.

Robert? The guy who relied on his strength more than anything else? The guy used a fricking Warhammer and was all about brute strength so you're saying Robert in his prime was stronger than the mountain?

I agree on the hound killing him, if nothing else but for plot, and Brienne is one who had flown 8nder the radar a bit but is definitely a good fighter, Dayne and Selma in there prime would defeat him I believe but I believe the 2 best suited to defeat him were Oberyn Jaimie and bring because of there capabilities of fighting without armor has been proven to be at an exceptional level and that is how most would try to beat the mountain. Get rid of your armor to be as quick as possible because if he is able to strike you armor isn't going to do much good.

Robert was said to be as quick as any fighter. He was also as skilled a fighter in Westeros in his prime. He had a slight disadvantage in strength, better reach due to war hammer, was a good deal faster, and was a much more skilled fighter than the Mountain. He wins easily.

I'm very confident that Robert in his prime could have killed the Mountain. The reason the Mountain lasts so long in battle because no one has thicker armor than he does. He's hit repeatably in battle and is done no real damage. He's not really know for his martial prowess, just for the fact it's almost impossible to kill him and brutal.
Robert was an absolute beast on the field. Really only the Kingsguard stood a chance against him. I'd bet 9 times out of 10 Robert would kill him. Plus it doesn't all come down to strength, but to battle tactics, which I think Robert was superior to the Mountain.

To kill a Giant you need a Giant slayer, good thing there's a man named for that.
I'd put him pretty high, of the current people probably only behind prime Selmy and current (or end stage) Jon Snow-- and that's only because Snow wouldn't back down from the size and is basically a mythical hero.
Arthur Dayne would cut him apart with little trouble unless he assumed he was dead-- that guy seems basically untouchable 1v1.

Oberyn more or less did beat him.
If you want to rank skill hypothetically Oberyn is better. If he isn't showboating the Mountain is just dead.

Gotta think maybe a young Robert. Armor is great, but thats a big slow target for a war hammer. Robert apparently was really good at swinging it. Not as sure about this one.
A good fighter who can move can beat the Mountain
People may say Brienne, but judging from her fight with the Hound, no way.

I mean if your whole thing is strength what the hell do you do when you come up against someone twice your size and much tougher.
I think people are underrating Jon Snow- dude has in single combat pretty much cut through people to the point that Ramsey-- a guy who had no problem going shirtless to take out the Iron Islanders was visibly terrified of a wounded and exhausted Snow when he emerged from the body pile looking like an avatar of death.
