I like it in the same family as Braveheart and Road House. Fun trash that I can enjoy.

I'd say it's one of the coolest/most fun shows ever.

My favorite event was Assault.

It was a pretty heavily fictionalized version of history. The addition of trash made it more entertaining.

It's in the top 50 for me, but I'm not sure how high it would be on my list.

it's not a goat movie, but i'm unaware of any claims by the producers that it is based on actual events or attempts to represent factual history in any way ...

Commodus was a real emperor and he was much like depicted in the film. Marcus Aurelius was also a real emperor and was emperor just before Commodus. Maximus was a real king though most of his stor in the film was made up.

Commodus also wore the lion's head in the film like he did in real life because of his hero Hercules. Commodus was needy and not liked by his family or Rome. Marcus Aurelius was well loved by plebs and patricians, so the movie actually depicts many things quite accurately including the way the gladiator fights occured and how animals were used as well.

But obvious liberites were taken as well.

I grew up on this movie and it's kind of the reference film comparrison speak for action/fight scenes with new movies.

Crowe was great, but pheonix was the first movie character I ever hated

The only thing keeping it out of my top 5 is the action scenes. The battle with the Barbarians at the beginning of the movie was well done. EVERY other fight scene was extremely choppy and not graphic enough in my opinion. I thought the fighting choreography of Troy and Braveheart were both better.
