I think if a prequel is going to be made, it should be independent from the original material. It can exist in the same universe, but the original material should have either referenced the story minimally or not at all.
For example, the original Star Wars trilogy already told us all of the possible surprises that were in the prequel trilogy. We know that Anakin turns bad. We know that Obi Wan was his master. We know that Anakin and Obi Wan fight. We know that Anakin gets fricked up and has to wear a suit. Those are big plot points that we already knew and I had no interest in watching them unfold. If Lucas would have instead elected to make a movie about where Han Solo came from, I would have been more interested.

John Wick
I want to see exactly what level of badassness leads a Russian crime boss to have this reaction:

Viggo Tarasov: I heard you struck my son.
Aureilo: Yes, sir, I did.
Viggo Tarasov: And may I ask why?
Aureilo: Yeah, well, because he stole John Wick's car, sir, and, uh, killed his dog.
Viggo Tarasov: [pause] Oh.

Is John Wick a good movie?

i just think they suck almost every time. Temple of doom is the only prequel with the events of the original not weighing on it even remotely
The problem
Is that any motivation to go backwards with a character instead of forward. Any movie explaining origins is moving backwards. The only backstory I've ever enjoyed was the opening sequence of the last crusade, and the origin elements were just wink and nod, they weren't the purpose of the scene

And part of my problem with a John Wick prequel is, there is nothing they could possibly put on screen that would live up to the lore and hype that the mystery of John Wick has already created for itself. For me, it's better using my imagination on how badass John Wick use to be. That mystery aspect is part of what made the movie great, IMO.
ETA: Which is why I'm glad that the new movie will be a sequel.

I agree, but I would still like to see things like:
quote:
Viggo Tarasov: In a bar, I once saw him kill three men... with a pencil.

The prequel elements of the godfather part II are also an example of how to do it, but that's only half the movie. They relate it back to what's happening as well as adding depth to a beloved character from the previous movie

Not that I'd necessarily like to see it, but you know at some point a prequel is coming to Hunger Games.

quote:Just finished it. Good movie. Keanu still sucks at talking but the action scenes were great.
Absolutely. Much better than I expected.
