I see this tossed around regularly but don't know where it comes from.

In order: Movies > Disney Animated Series > Novels after TFA release

Anything that has been released after May 11th, 2012 is considered in-universe canon. Though Lucasfilm considers the Clone Wars animated show to be canon as well. Basically all the books and comics prior to May 11, 2012 (Thrawn trilogy, New Jedi Order, etc etc) are not considered true any more.

If something is "canon", that means its considered to exist universally across any future disney star wars affiliations...or basically the events in the canon moments will be true in the movies as well.

The owner of the franchise determines what is canon.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I don't give the slightest frick if it's canon or not. It's all fake.
