for what it is, there really aren't that many faults with this movie

Lots of good ones in here so far.
Boogie Nights is on my list. I was enthralled from start to finish.

- The Dark Knight.
Absolutely riveting duality between Batman and Joker. Joker was completely turned into a corporal form of chaos and evil and that was script, directing, and acting. Really unparalleled.
- Pulp Fiction
More a collection of short stories than a full movie, but script, acting, storyline, directing, just engrossing and complete.
- Saving Private Ryan
No contest one of the best war movies from beginning to end in all categories.

I feel like the more times I watch this movie the sillier it gets. There are some great moments but man, some really dumb stuff too.

Also don't think it has been mentioned yet but The Thing is a perfect movie.

Great story, great dialogue, great villan, great hero, great cinematography, all-around great cast, great score...and one of the hottest characters of all-time.

I agree with the posters that say Shawshack Redemption, Back to the Future, and Princess Bride. Both movies that appeal to a very wide range of people. I have to watch them, any time I see them on.
It's always been a meh movie to me that got a lot more hype cause of the death.

There are several Pixar films I can't find much wrong with at all.

Oooo, yeah that's good one that gets forgotten. Special effects are campy and dated, but the underlying horror is excellent.

Chinatown
Aguirre, the Wrath of God
Aguirre, the Wrath of God
quote:only a few movies that I know of that "have it all"
What film has it all?
that means action, romance, humor, drama, everything along with pretty much acing it with casting, writing, directing, cinematography, music, editing etc. it has to blend all of those elements while keeping a consistent tone.
citizen kane for example isn't on the list because it doesn't have humor. Jaws doesn't have romance, and so forth. even though they're both flawless movies.
empire strikes back is a perfect movie. it has one blemish which is a 2 second scene shoved in during post production against a terrible matte painting that serves no purpose at all. it's just 2 nobody rebels saying something we already know and it feels like they thought the audience was too stupid to follow along with what was happening...it's like 15 minutes into the movie
ghostbusters while no work of freaking art...it has it all. it's hard to find one single thing remotely wrong with it. it's just the right mix of everything.
Raiders of the lost ark...hard to find something wrong with it and it checks all the boxes
sticking strictly to your requirements
jaws
citizen kane
godfather
the thing
are the only movies I can think of that are pretty much perfect.
quote:like so many iconic things from the movies this was not the plan. the shark didn't work so he had to go with the minimalism approach.
It was also a brilliant move to use the POV of the shark

it absolutely is. and it has shitloads of rewatchability because you want to try to figure out the order in which people were assimilated and time stamp shite

There are quite a few that I would put in a top 10 list (Master and Commander, Ex Machina, Fantastic Mr Fox, etc..) but in terms of a perfect movie I would have to say A Knight's Tale.
Also in the running would be O Brother Where Art Thou or Princess Bride for a myriad of reasons but mainly that they cross so many genres and can be watched multiple times with multiple different people and all be enjoyable; combining the right mixture of dramatic, humorous, well written/directed.
