See people in here post about a movie that they think is very enjoyable, and watchable but isn't really great. What's the difference? I don't think some old movie that is supposed to be a classic is great just because I'm supposed to. I'm sorry but there's no way I could sit through something like gone with the wind. It's not great to me, whereas something like guardians of the galaxy is very entertaining to me so I would consider it great.

A great movie to me leaves me speechless at the end of it. Almost to the point of what did I just watch. Stays with you for days or forever. Thinking about it and what happened. Then when you watch it again, the same thing happens. Interstellar does that for me for example.

Entertaining movie to me is funny and/or action packed but not too serious or thought provoking. Something I don't have to fully invest in but still enjoy. Like dumb and dumber for me.

A great movie leaves a lasting impact on you. It makes you think about it for days or weeks after you've seen it. An entertaining movie gives you a solid two hours of enjoyment but you forget what happened five minutes after its over.

Sometimes a movie is just good entertainment. It's not bad, but it's not something that really sticks with you after the fact, stirs the emotions, etc. A lot of action movies tend to fall in this category because it's just about the special effects and action.

Then you have really great movies that really stick with you after the fact and rise to the top with their storytelling, visuals, and/or quality acting. They reach you deeper than just, "Hey that was fun".

There are movies that may be very impactful, moving, and important. Or maybe they're just really complex and blow your mind but aren't necessarily "fun".

Some other movies may not have super original plots or deep meanings, but might be really fun and easy to rewatch.

Schindler's List is one that many people mention as a great film but it's not fun.

So if you would rather watch one movie over and over again, but it doesn't provoke much deep thought you still wouldn't consider it a great movie, even if a movie you classify as great you wouldn't want to watch as much.

An entertaining movie is enjoyable. A great movie makes you feel something deep. You may not even enjoy it-it may make you uncomfortable. But it stays with you.

This is the TV side of it but I think a good example of a great show and an entertaining one is Scrubs and Psych. I love Psych but it is pretty formulaic. Scrubs is kind of similar to Psych but I think the story and character progression is much better and focused. That said Shawn and Gus is the better bromance.

One is art. It is emotionally stirring and moving and evokes some significant mental analysis of the work at hand.

The other is the equivalent to a cheap thrill like riding an amusement park ride or even mediocre sex. Sure, it's fun for the time being, but as soon as its over your ready to move on with your life. There is no lasting impact that endures beyond the duration of the film.

Being am easier movie to watch (comedies, etc) doesn't meant it's a great movie

ETA: I'll use this year as an example. Movies like Spotlight and the Revenant are movies where at the end I was like "damn, that was good" and just kinda thought about them in more detail. But they're not movies I would want to rewatch over and over if they're on tv and such. Whereas I'll watch happy Gilmore anytime it's on tv

A great movie is timeless. You don't think about the time period, fashions, etc. you don't start focusing on the production details or small stuff you normally talk about until you've rewatched it a couple times.

A great movie is a total package - you don't separate the plot from the dialogue, cinematography, score, etc. It's an experience.

Going by these two definitions Requiem for a Dream might be the greatest movie I've ever seen. I need a nap, a Bourbon, and to rethink my life after I see that damn movie

And it makes you realize that you hadn't just liked Jennifer Connelly all those years; you had been genuinely in love with her.

Did I just say that out loud?
