What Are Your Thoughts On These Lists Of The Greatest TV Shows Of All Time?
Posted on 2/24/17 at 4:07 am

Writers Guild of America
1. The Sopranos
2. Seinfeld
3. The Twilight Zone
4. All in the Family
5. M*A*S*H
6. The Mary Tyler Moore Show
7. Mad Men
8. Cheers
9. The Wire
10. The West Wing
TV Guide
1. Seinfeld
2. I Love Lucy
3. The Honeymooners
4. All in the Family
5. The Sopranos
6. 60 Minutes
7. Late Show with David Letterman
8. The Simpsons
9. The Andy Griffith Show
10. Saturday Night Live
Shows That Made Both Lists
Seinfeld
The Sopranos
All in the Family
My Thoughts: I agree that Seinfeld, All in the Family, Saturday Night Live, I Love Lucy all probably belong in the top ten of all time. I find including Late Show with David Letterman, especially instead of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, to be just plain silly. I also would not include The Mary Tyler Moore Show in the top ten of all time. I feel that a legitimate, persuasive case could be made for the remainder.

Absolutely the first thing that popped into my mind.
Also, the writer's guild seems to include newer shows while TV Guide's list obviously contains more influential shows. Shows that spawned numerous imitators.
ETA: Sopranos over Seinfeld in the WG list just shows how much they value writing over influence.

How old are these lists? I'm thinking 5-10 years.

The TV Guide list is ridiculous so I won't bother with that one.
The Guild one needs to swap Breaking Bad for Mad Men at 7 and, while I'd swap a few in the order, I'm ok with it.

Completely invalidates the entire TV guide list. It's obviously compiled by fools.

The only show I really liked on either list is The Simpsons.

you forget that most of the people on these boards and people voting are old white men.
im sure in 20 years when they poll a bunch of 50 and 60 something people, it will be full of shows we love today and in the 90s

Breaking Bad? Game of Thrones?

The Wire being #9 on one list and nowhere on the other list is ridiculous. No other television show comes close imo.

I would much rather hang out with the Writer's Guild of America.

As long as Seinfeld, The Sopranos and The Wire are in the top 10, I'm good.

TV Guide's mistake was in listing The Late Show instead of Late Night with David Letterman. It was Letterman's NBC show that was revolutionary (even more so than Carson was, since Carson was refining an existing product).
MASH and Cheers are overrated.

While it wouldn't be my list, the Writer's Guild list is well-thought out and aside from the absence of The Simpsons, completely defensible.

quote:SNL absolutely should be included, but a notation needs to be made as to which time period. Original with John Belushi, Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner and Jane Curtain was brilliant, and top 5 easily. Newer stuff, not so much.
Should not be included:
Mary Tyler Moore
West Wing
Late Show
SNL

Also, as an older guy, I would put Soap somewhere in the top 10.
