In fact, it isn't too far off from real Desmond Doss.
This. The real Doss had a strange accent or maybe even a speech impediment. Thought Garfield did fine.

Both should at least get a nomination but sadly neither will... Gibson's past plus they will make sure half the big acting categories are made up of black actors whether they deserve it or not. Some really Great actors and performances are going to get shafted this year.
You probably said the same thing last year.

Watched earlier tonite.
I thought you typed that with sarcasm until I read more into it. That dude was a Bad muhfuh.
[Spoiler]
And the battle scene is by far the best I've ever seen. It was a work of art.
The way it starts and startles the ever living shite out of you, then it felt like 15-20 minutes of the most intense battle I've ever seen on film.
Then a short intermission when they're in the bunker, bonding..
Then back at it some more. With the craziness.. Complete with the flame thrower guy getting his tank shot/exploded.
Anyway..
Tl;dr
Hacksaw Ridge=Awesome.

What I liked is that Gibson left out some of Doss's real life badassery because he felt that the audience would find it too unbelievable.

Question: I know the captain survived. Did the Sargent? Did the guy that slapped Doss? I know ghoul did. which of the main ones survived?

The guy that slapped him was the guy he became friends with during battle. He was the one in that hole with him. He was killed. Vince Vaughn was injured but lived.

Just went and saw this and wow
There was a little too much cheese with him and Dorothy but then again, this is WW2 and the times were different. Battle scenes were excellent but I think someone cut some onions in the theater.
I haven't been to the movies in a while and as soon as I heard the fricking popcorn getting chewed I remembered why

It is worth a watch simply for the best battle scenes since Saving Private Ryan. But even then it has a lot more to offer than just that.
A lot of the reviews were slamming the battle scenes.
Saying they were over-the-top typical Gore-fetish from Mel...
IDK if true...maybe it's just Mel's rep as a sadist filmmaker makes them immediately criticize it.

I kinda sorta agree, but it had nothing to do with the gore stuff. It wasn't too much to where it ruined it by any means, but it felt like a touch of Michael Bay with all the firery explosions and guys getting somersaulted thru th air.
Still thought it was a very good movie, and overall I still thought the battle scenes were awesome but it didn't come close to Saving Private Ryan's scene for me

Helluva movie..those were some brave, brave men to go up that ridge knowing that it may be the last day of your life. Comparing them to the SJW of today makes me sick.

Just saw it. Incredible movie!

Saw it the other day with my youngest son. Awesome movie. Awesome story. And as others have mentioned, his bravery was actually toned down in order to make it more believable. If you have done some research, MG took a lot of artistic license with the life of DD. But overall he stayed true to the story. A must see.

Meh. People comparing the battle scenes to Saving Private Ryan are out of their minds. Battle scenes from Hacksaw remind me of Windtalkers.
Fury had much grittier combat scenes.
This is a good popcorn flick...nothing more. Nowhere near Saving Private Ryan in cinematography or acting.

saw it monday ... would rate is 8.5/10 ... may be a touch generous, but it's a well-made movie ... didn't think the war/battle scenes were anywhere close to spr, as others said ... there's enough accuracy there, aside from the need to condense things, that you're not disappointed after researching the story ... gave the audience enough background information about okinawa to make us understand why it's a big deal he did what he did ... certainly better than a typical action flick ... the very end where they interviewed the real life people that interacted with him (esp the captain/sarge that thought he was a coward) was very, very cool ...

Alright....enjoy your human shield/one handed BAR moments.
Hacksaw Ridge is an average at best war film.

Hacksaw Ridge is not a popcorn flick
Not a great movie? Sure, no problem with that. But popcorn flick and hacksaw ridge don't go together

The battle scenes were intense but I kept wanting to yell 'spread the frick out' the whole time.
No trained soldiers would spend that much time bunched up in battle.
