FMJ, while Great, is barely a top 5 Kubrick movie. The first half is a incredible, but it can't hold a candle to Apocalypse Now as a whole... The Vietnam scenes were shot at a London gas plant with fake palm trees!

Don't get me wrong, it's still like an 8.5, but it's just too inconsistent between the two halves of the film.

The movie itself is pretty much structured this way.

The first half was sustained greatness. The second half had occasional moments of fleeting OK-ness.

That's the duality of man...and the movie.

Welcome to the party, pal.

And, I had the somewhat unique experience of going to basic training (Army, but still) in 1988 - my drill instructors had obviously all just had a VHS (yeah, buddy, I'm old, wanna fight about it?) group rewatch because they quoted the film the entire cycle. That was (not) fun.

It was supposed to be Hue, baw. They explain this IN the movie.

The palm trees were probably overkill, but there is absolutely nothing wrong about the terrain depicted in the movie, generally, compared to the historical event it was depicting.

Are you going to complain that Ermey was actually a "Hollywood" marine and didn't go through or DI at the Island?
