good decision, IMNSHO. What a great movie, and one of the harbingers of the nerd cool phenomenon.

Heaven forbid I ever see Apollo 13 on at the same time as Shawshank. Those are the only two movies that it doesn't matter what else is on or what I am doing, I finish watching them.

Caught Apollo 13 tonight a little over half way through. Still want to see it all with those AMC film facts. They are pretty interesting.

Didn't watch it tonight but have many times. One of my all time favorite movies.

I know the problem.

It's like, my head explodes because of a decision like that.

Apollo 13

best time i've ever had watching it was in oshkosh wisconsin at the EAA airventure air show. one of their main sponsors is ford, who every year put up a massive, maybe 3 story tall?, blow up outdoor movie screen called fly-in theater to show different aviation themed films on. everybody brings lawn chairs or sits on the grass in the open, with night sky above. and every year they have people well known introduce a movie that's related to them somehow. like not long ago, cant remember which year, they had harrison ford introduce one of his movies.
anyways in 2007 when i went they showed Apollo 13 and astronaut Jim Lovell introduced the movie before it played. it was pretty badass

eta: just found a video of lovell when he introduced the movie LINK

I went with the Big Lebowski instead of the debate. Much better choice.

I still remember going to see this movie in an Alexandria theater with my Grandma years ago. When the return module burst through the clouds everyone in the theater started cheering and clapping like we were in Ground Control.

We went with the Avengers. In related news, I'm voting for Tony Stark.

I met Gene Kranz, flight director of Apollo 13, about a year and a half ago:

Played by Ed Harris:

He said the movie was very accurate. The only big difference was the concentration on the power supply in the movie. As he put it, "We knew what power we had. It was simple math."

He said the biggest issue facing them was the specific burns that were required to get the precise angle of entry into the atmosphere.

it exuded a myriad of emotions. you could probably write an entire book just from the expressions on my face when they hit the water.

Yeah. Apollo 13 is one of my favorite movies out there and should have beaten Braveheart for Best Picture. But I digress.

When I was 10 years old, my family and I traveled to Florida to watch the Space Shuttle Discovery launch. We ran into Fred Haise, lunar module pilot of the Apollo 13 mission (played by Bill Paxton in the movie). We talked to him for what must have been 30 minutes in the lobby of our hotel. He gave me his autograph at the end of it all.

Any time I need inspiration, I watch the scene where they have the engineers in the room with the Square CO2 scrubber and Round Canister, a table full of everything the astronauts have in the spacecraft, and basically have to figure out how to fit a square peg in a round hole. Not only do they do it, but they build the contraption AND have step by step instructions. Such epic awesomness from people who know that 3 guys lives are on the line.

Awesome, awesome movie. Every time I watch them, I find myself pulling for them to make it through the atmosphere, and every time I feel like I'm on pins and needles waiting for them to come through.

Just a fantastic movie.

I watched some of it too. Got me thinking, any of you old posters on here remember what it was like seeing that and want to share?
