You know, I've never read the script. I'm not sure if it's that or VV's performance. He had to have improved most of that. "Mickey, is he cute? Is he clean. If he's clean, tell him to come in."

He was a complete mess, and just hid it behind a false sense of confidence which is why he chose to hang around people that looked up to him so much making him feel superior.
The final scene is the most real glimpse of his psyche we see in the whole film.
He would be fun in small doses but would get his arse kicked if anyone was around him for more than a night or two every few weeks. We've all had a friend like that at some point

He is a total phony who actually seems to care about his friends, but he can't stop being a poseur. He is a likable enough guy, though, and you kind of feel sorry for him. He's the friend that you worry about OD'ing or dying in a car wreck on the way home from a party drunk. Lovable, phony, a mess, yet you want to make sure he's alright.
When you get married and get on with your life, you leave him behind because he won't quit being a mess. Yet, you had good times together. That's kind of the way the movie goes and it is pretty true to life. I had friends like him. Total disasters, yet good with the ladies and fun to be around, for awhile.
