I could be classified as a "shallow" viewer, sometimes seeing nothing more than the surface. I would like to hear some of your thoughts or theories on the underlying themes of this show.

From another thread, someone talked about the

quote:

walt taking little things from people he kills

Theory...are there any other things like this that you have noticed? Care to share? I really enjoy reading this stuff...

Colors seem to play a big role and have some sort of meaning. Not sure exactly what it is, but the use of colors is obvious.

I would love to hear some theories as well because I'm an idiot when it comes to picking up covert things.

But... It may be that he "inherits" some traits from the people he's killed but I think it's more that he's on this downhill regression into a criminal life. Every step takes him further and further into this pit of ..evil?

You could look at it a different way as well. Throughout the series he has been shaking of the shackles of his societal morality. Almost a renaissance from a weak/meek science teacher into a powerful drug overlord.

This story or arc is both empowering and also damning...such a good story!

Walys bond with Jesse is so strong because he is the able bodied son he never had.

That's my position at least.

Hanks obsession with rocks fills his void of tracking down rocks.

That's not really inheriting a trait from someone he killed though, unless we know krazy 8 cut his own crusts off right?

yea Krazy 8 requested it and the scene when he cut the crust of his own sandwhich, it appeared as if he wasn't gonna cut the crust and then Walter did

Has anyone heard about the new trailer? Not the five seasons in three minutes, but the new footage? Pretty epic...

Didn't feel like starting a new thread, so sorry that this is off topic.

The mention of Walt taking things from people is pretty intriguing. I didn't really pick up on that until it was mentioned in the last thread.

Someone mentioned colors. When the show starts out Walt wears a lot of drab and dull colors - browns, tans etc. This represents how boring his life is. Also, when watching the show, notice the use of green for either life or money - the baby's nursery is painted green. I thought his car was a tannish color, but it is actually a dull green - the color of money. Also notice when he wears black (evil) and red (passion/violence) what happens in the show. As Heisenberg, he wears black including the hat.

If you haven't watched the "Fly" episode in season 3, or if you already have go back and watch it and consider this. Flies are representative of evil (Lord of the Flies). I also looked up fly symbolism and discovered the use of them representing morality and our insignificance. From Shakespeare's King Lear: "As flies to wanton boys, are we to the gods; They kill us for their sport..."

I am still trying to figure out Hank collecting minerals. I am about halfway through season 4 now. My initial thought is rocks, as Marie continues to call them, are useless and they represent how Hank feels - useless. Or maybe how he perceives he is seen by his wife, even though he knows better.

Mirrors and mirror images of things seem to play a big part in the series, especially during the first season. It's supposed to represent the two sides of Walt's personalty and duality and Walt's ability to walk the line between Heisenberg and Walter White. Even the name Heisenberg represents something about duality and coming off as something but being something completely different. Warner Heisenberg created a theory about light being able to act as both a wave and a particle at the same time. Walt is able to act as a family man and drug kingpin at the same time. Pretty damn interesting.

Rewatching season 5. Watching Hank limp around the remains of the lab, he reminds me of Captain Ahab.

In one of the commentary episodes for the first season (probably the pilot) Vince Gilligan says they gave a palette for each character based and kind of develop it from there.

Early I remember Walt wearing a lot of green, skylar blue, hank orange, and Marie purple.

One interesting theory involves Walt's car(s) representing his soul. Every time he does something bad his car gets damaged. Finally he sells it really cheap.

Anyone else think that naming the main characters White and Pinkman is some sort of homage to Reservoir Dogs?

Always thought it was funny that hank drives a Patriot and Walt drives an Aztec. Underlines/foreshadows their adversarial relationship.

Heisenberg is also a real scientist that came up with something called the uncertainty principle which says something along the lines of "the more you know about the location of a particle the less you know about its momentum"

Since the show is called breaking bad we know Walt ends up on the wrong side of the tracks but as the show progresses we don't know how quickly it will take place.
