Perhaps it is because more gets filtered before it gets here, and that we are so over-saturated with bland, unfunny American attempts at humor, but I find the quality of Brit humour to be more lastingly funny.
Especially their sketch comedy shows.
Not to say that America is devoid of humour, but so much of what is presented is derivative and pedantic.

What's your preference, and why?

Honestly I have never found British humor very funny. Not even Monty Python.

Not fair to compare. We only get the really good british shows over here. We don't get exposed to their shite shows like we do with our shite shows.

We don't have enough knowledge of their good and bad shows. According to a friend who lives in Britain, our shows average out at mediocre with a few really good ones and some really bad ones.

The British have some really good ones and a ton of really bad ones. Very few mediocre ones though.

I'm not up on the British lingo, and can't understand half of what they say anyway, so American.

That Mitchell and Webb Look is pure comedic genius.
Little Britain as well.
The League of gentlemen was terrific.

The Brits have a great tradition of comedic cross dressing though, dating back to shakespeare

Peep Show

Just started watching this on netflix and i love it so far.

I feel with british television they put more emphasis on talent as opposed to good looks.
Hbo and AMC follow this formula with great success.
Most british actors have some formal training where most american networks will put pretty faces who can't act for shite.

Extras, the office(UK), spaced, little britain as well as the wire, sopranos, breaking bad.. are great examples of shows with "ugly" leading characters. They also know when to end a show so that it doesn't drag on until mediocrity. Instead we cancel quality shows like arrested development and squeeze every last drop out of shows like the office.

You don't see this too often with network television lately.

It's definitely more verbose and colorful than American English. I can barely understand American slang.

Indeed. Also, it seems they can get away with "edgier" humour than the PC nazis will allow here in the states

Like so many other great bbc shows. They are stingy with that 3rd season it seems.

The 6 episode seasons are too short. But perhaps their relative brevity only increases their quality

Peep Show + Mitchell and Webb Look + IT Crowd = fricking amazing, but I think we're only watching the best of everything Britain has to offer. How do those stack up against Archer, Arrested Development, and Wilfred. Those are the best 3 best US comedies I can think of over the past 5 years, and they stack up evenly. I can think of about 5 or so American shows that are close to the quality of those 3, so I think it may just be that we've seen a the best of Britain vs. everything from the USA.

i agree that all those listed are great but to be fair its safe to say that those are not the best they have to offer.

A few that ive seen are Fawlty towers, Im Alan Partidge, Spaced, Blackadder, Extras(i consider it British because of Gervais and Merchant),Little Britain, Monty Python,Whose line is it anyway,Doc Martin, and kingdom. Some better than others but each definitely have their moments.

While they may not be everyone's type of comedy these are all worth watching. I'm not saying british comedy is better but considering most of these appeared between two networks; it is a pretty good track record. You can't discount what British comedy has done to influence TV today and i have only watched and/or mentioned a small portion of them.

I find British humor to be much more witty and funny, whether it is sketch comedy or dark and dry.
