Does this frustrate anyone else? I find that the longer each individual episode of a show is, the more difficult it is to set aside time to watch it. It's extremely easy to watch a show in 30 minute snippets. Much more difficult, but do-able for hour-long episodes. However, 2 hour episodes are simply too much of a time commitment to give regularly at any given time. It makes it harder to "work it in" to one's busy schedule.

This has made it tough to watch series like "Vinyl", "Fargo", ect.

Anyone else have an opinion on 2 hour episodes verses shorter installments?

That was only the first episode of Vinyl....in which case I'm okay with it. Maybe even prefer it.

All 2 hour episodes? No thanks.

ETA: No reason you couldn't watch 1 hour of the episode and another hour later.

Besides Sherlock, finales/premiere, and the occasional back-to-back, I have not seen many "two hour episodes." I certainly do not recall a two-hour Fargo episode, but then again I watched it on-demand.

I wouldn't care if they made it just one long 22 hour episode. I have a button on my remote that allows me to pause or stop a show when I feel like I've had enough.

That sounds good in theory, but I like at least some semblance of demarcation and plot resolution at regular intervals to keep me interested.

Some episodes of Fargo and OJ Simpson have gone 15 minutes or so over an hour but not every episode. Once in a while is ok.

I think with the rise of binge watching and mostly threaded, long-term, multiple season shows - episode length is much like chapter length - at the end of the day, just pause it at a scene break and pick it up later.

That would be my response to your general complaint, although I agree - episode length of 2 hours elevates each episode to the length of a feature film. That's a pretty significant commitment.

Generally comedies - and with respect to broadcast shows, really means about 20 to 23 minutes of content - so you can run through 3 an hour. Even with an ample 27 episodes for a season, for example, you could knock out in about ~9 hours of binging. An hour long show takes a couple of weeks to knock out 1 season of as few as 10 to 15 episodes, 1 hour at a time. A show with all 2-hour episodes would take a month at that rate.

I've noticed just about every FX show I watch has time where it goes an extra 15-maybe even 20 mins sometimes

The whole reason I prefer watching tv series over movies is I can watch 30 min or 1 hr if I don't want to binge instead of having to commit to a 2 hour movie.

The only acceptable 2 hour tv episode is a pilot or finale, mainly a finale since I would already be into the show

I've found that the extended episodes typically don't have great flow and tend to have a lot of filler. Stop trying to squeeze in another commercial break and tell a tighter story.

It was only for pilots right? Maybe finale for Fargo? I don't mind it if this is the case but if they were all 2 hours then yea, that's too much.

I don't like it. I haven't watched Vinyl yet because the premiere is 2 hours. Probably won't watch it for this reason unless I hear the series ends up being amazing or something.

If I have 2 hours to spare and am gonna watch something I'll watch a movie.

Exception would be made if it's an amazing show I've been watching for a long time like GOT.

Its funny complaining about 2 hours b/c I watched Shogun on DVD recently and looked up its history on TV.

Shogun opened at 3 hours with commercials and then was on nightly for 2 hours.

I doubt the public today could handle a mini-series on regular TV anymore...even with TiVo.

Me too. I've recorded Vinyl, but haven't started watching simply because the premiere is 2 hours.

If I heard it was awesome, I'd be more likely to make time, but the mixed reviews have me on the fence.

I may just delete it. There's always HBO GO to watch it later if the mood ever strikes.

******

Same with movies. I won't go to the 3 hour ones they make these days. Tighten that shite up. Exception: Tarantino flicks.

I run into this a lot because most of what I record are two hour shows on PBS and History.

It took me FOREVER to watch The Dust Bowl, Mankind, America the story of us, etc.
