True Detective (Collective Theories Thread)

We have had 5 glorious works of art. The story is taking shape. Each episode deserves its own thread because, yes, this show is that awesome.
However, we have too much material in our threads to wade through. Some of us have read every word of every thread and then some outside sources to try and put together and understand what it is we are watching, better yet what it is we are experiencing.
I do not think I am alone in now suspecting that we are in fact a part of the story. We are so interested because we suspect that the story has multiple levels and the forth level is the way the audience fits into the metaphysical world described by Rust in episode 5.
The Forth Level is You
Now that does not mean that the story is any less important once you figure out that you assume the role of the eternal perspective. You are that forth dimension. The story has to be good for you to keep (re)watching and re-living the scenes over and over. Yes Cohle will arrest him and Marty will shoot Reggie Ledoux over and over because you and millions of others will keep watching that scene over and over through the years. Why because the story is good.
So let's talk about our theories and see if we can put together a scenario that makes sense. We have three episodes to go and this series is going to end well, I just know it. Feel free to put forward your theory(ies).
As a side note and related to my above theory, I think we the first viewers are getting this series in its purest form. It will never be better because we are forced to live the nightmare laid out in weekly installments. And worse still, we do not know where it is going. We have a week to experience and contemplate the events of each episode before we get our fix. In the end we will have this series seared into our souls.

This show is my meth. I relapse throughout the week only to have my heart racing on sunday night for one hour. After the show last night I felt like I just came down from an adrenaline rush.

Without reading your post, I'm only through the second episode. I've been busy and haven't had a chance to catch up. I'm going to wait til its over, then binge watch.

Might be better than having to wait every week for my fix.

Dude if you are through the second episode and you don't want more, something is wrong with you son! Keep watching and get caught up by this Sunday. You will be glad you did!

I think Rusty is in some kind of deep cover way off the grid working the case.
I think the rift between he and Marty that has been alluded to is a ruse and they are working together.
I think it is someone involved in some kind of satanic group that is well entrenched politically. The rift between the two and Rustys current situation are all just their way of throwing off the heat they were facing and opening up doors.

This is quite possible and I have had this thought numerous times. I have been reaching for crazy endings all morning thinking about it and everytime I come up with something, I think of something else that makes it seem unlikely.

There's only a couple things I really feel sure about right now.
Rusty is definitely still in the game.
Neither Rusty not Marty are the killer.

While I don't think Marty is the killer, I feel he may get dragged into something really sinister.

Another thing I really believe is that there isn't going to be just one person behind all this.
I think it is some kind of satanic group and these killings are part of a ritual. Maybe Marty knows some of these powerful people through family/etc and he gets roped into shutting the case down in 02 and this was supposed rift between he and Rusty?

Marty already is waist deep in Ledoux blood. So the question becomes how much further does go. I personally do not see Marty as anyway connected to the Yellow King.

This. Showing Rust at the scene of the newest murder only proves to me that he is working the case.
They still haven't really shown what caused the falling out between Rusty and Marty.
IMHO, All signs point to the Gov's brother who is the "high preacher/yellow king" of this underground stuff. But if it was him, he would have lost his political clout by 2002 and for sure by 2012 so how can he be so protected if it is him?

My only theory is the guy that was cutting the grass at the school has something to do with the plot. He turns for a second when talking to Rust and you can see above his beard line scars on his face. I know what you are thinking and yes This show has made me go off the deep end

See my last post. I think it is a group of people and the killings are part of a ritual.
No one person could be "connected" enough for people to cover this kinda stuff up, unless the powerful people are actually in on it.

I watched the first two, and loved them. Then Superbowl, Walking Dead started back up, I've been busy, and I decided to finish series 2 of Sherlock because 3 pops up on my dvr everytime I open it. Walking Dead is the only show the wife and I get to watch the night it comes on anymore. Having a 2 year old really screws up your TV watching.
Its hard to catch up on stuff when your TV time usually involves watching on my iPad in bed before I go to sleep.

I do agree that Rust is still working the case and his solitary lifestyle as a drinking bartender is only his cover. He might have gone rogue but he's still on the case. This would be a good set up for him and Marty's falling out- Marty wanted to give it up as political pressure was mounting and their jobs were threatened. Rust wouldn't quit. they fall out, get fired, part ways. And now they are getting drawn back into this as Rust is getting too close, but Marty has to protect Rust or face charges for capping Ledoux. JMO.
Or maybe this is all just one big dream sequence and we will see Nick P. sitting in a room and putting his pen down as the last scene in Ep.8. Wouldn't that piss everyone off?

If Marty is in on it , then I think one of the most revealing scenes thus far is when Rust is talking to the guy on the lawn mower at the school and Marty begins to honk repeatedly to inform they have a lead and need to get out of there. Could be because he didn't want Rust getting any information from that guy or because he didn't want him going into the school.
That being said, I think/hope that Marty is on Rust's side and not a part of the conspiracy.

Marty's daughter is what keeps him in play. She is definitely involved one way or another. I still don't see Marty directly involved in the cult. Marty is covering his murder of Ledoux.
